I haven't read the novella, but Hall's film feels both true to its literary root and with its own distinct cinematic sensibility. That contradiction is one of the many that richly weave throughout the film in both the provocative story and confident filmmaking, appropriate for the subject at hand. That extends to the performances as well, as Thompson and Negga effectively deliver two opposite character types, in which they are able to convey their own personal turmoils while suggesting how they're getting drawn towards each other. 8/10

I should watch again as I hear the cut is different then the one from Sundance. Found it great at the time though.
