A lot of fun: entertaining and satisfying. As the first in a trilogy it ticks all the boxes and makes me excited to see the next entry. ***.5/*****

This starts off almost unwatchable in the first thirty minutes, but then it becomes pretty damn fun to watch, and it may just have one of the more original/greatest kills in horror movies in the 2000s.

    I thought this was great.

At first I found the teenage arguing / drama a little much, but it quickly became apparent that this movie's goal is to be a YA horror book with an R rating. Silly teenage drama and all. And as a huge YA horror junkie when I was that age, it was wonderful.

Not perfect. The teenage drama shouting matches do go on a tad long in the second half. And some inspired music choices (hearing Bush's Machinehead while the kids unload off buses to go to school made me giddy), but then it goes off the deep end trying to cram as much mid-90s music possible into scenes and it gets messy. I counted 4 different songs used in one scene of less than 2 minutes. Would have been better to pick one and let it play out, ala Donnie Darko.

Awesome kills, genuine tension, and an overall really neat concept.

    I can't wait to watch parts 2 and 3.

I hope this gets some kind of physical release.
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"

    "Rick...it's a flamethrower."

My oldster friends and I have been lambasting the 1995 and 1997 music choices in this thing on facebook. Prodigy "Firestarter" in 1994? NOPE.

hahaha! I tweeted the same thing. I got over it pretty quickly, but definitely was like, "I didn't hear that song until high school, damnit."
