    Work Work Work Thread

I can't remember if one exists. Anyways I'm here to complain about the fact that my work got self checkouts and they're unnecessarily complicated. Half the time I get stuck babysitting them because I have manager numbers (yet I'm not a manager-more on that later). I mean it's nice that they're not calling me up to check as much so I get shit done so that's good, I guess. I wonder when the robots will take my job.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

The company I work for hasn't started putting self checkouts in, but have been very clear that THEY'RE COMING!

What I don't understand is that they aren't going to be saving labour in a lot of stores. So what's the point?

It's going to increase shrink 10 fold for nothing.

No, that's when every employee will be given the work of 6 people and have their bathroom breaks taken away.

Oddly enough even though my store is small and put self checkouts in to replace cashiers they haven't gotten rid of anyone since. And I think they hired another cashier a while back. Some of our customers hate the machines and refuse to use them. Others seemed happy we got them. I'm expecting some of them to break down, too, just because haha.

Think we're facing a really interesting moment right now.

Unemployment with government incentives is paying more than many jobs.
Many corporate jobs can't hire anybody, and "referral bonuses" and "hiring bonuses" aren't doing the trick.
Government is also moving the minimum wage in many states.
Corporations generally don't want to be seen as paying minimum wage. McDonald's workers in many areas just went on strike calling out McDonald's for saying they will take 3 more years to get to the $15/hour.

I have no idea what this is going to lead to, but find it all very interesting.

I think it probably leads to more automation and the robots taking people's jobs. Which will likely result in more unemployment.

    Inflation will reset everything.

Also, people who didn't capitalize on the lowest interest rates in 60 years will be kicking themselves when the housing market resets. (notice I didn't say pop)

But aren't the low interest rates meaningless when the cost of the housing itself is so obscenely high?

The house I grew up in was 300k when my dad bought it (in 91), and is now 1.6 million.

No. Because you'll end up spending more money on the house with a high interest rate and lower housing prices, then you would if you bought with lower interest rates and high housing markets. Add inflation into the mix and you're in a much worse spot then you could have been in.

A difference in interest rate by a point could mean for an additional $50-100k you paid for on a house after 30 years (depending on the market). For my area it's closer to $200-300k.

I was shocked when I looked at my statement this year. I literally just moved last July and the principle on my mortgage is MELTING away because the rate I bought is so good. It hasn't even been a year yet. My previous two homes I never saw the principle move this fast.

My point is that we (speaking of North America) have an astronomically high number of people who cannot afford to buy a home at all, due to the high housing costs and low wages that haven't matched inflation in 40 years.

Low interest rates is great, of course, but means nothing when it cannot be afforded in the first place.

Yeh that's a tougher problem to solve. Home prices are not going to go in the other direction, so waiting for something to change on that front is likely not a good idea either.

My controversial opinion is that not everyone should own or buy a house. Of course after renting an apartment I'm not sure I believe in that anymore. I would like a condo.

I just think that anyone who works 40+ hours a week, no matter the job, should be able to afford food and shelter.

Which hasn't been a reality in a long time.

They haven't raised the minimum wage in a long time so that's part of it.

I refinanced, and had seven years removed.
My place has also gone up almost 80% in the three years I've lived here.

    Woot.

I forgot how annoying it is to hunt for a new job. I filled out a reference online questionnaire thing for a coworker and it asked what his greatest achievement in the company was. That's a weird bullshit question.

Yes, hunting for work can be a super pain in the butt.

I know it has already been meme'd to death, but having to enter all your resume info 2-3 times then attach your resume anyways is maddening.

Questions like "why are you applying to work here?", "what is your greatest weakness?", "tell me about a time you had to confront another employee over something they did that you felt was immoral or wrong".

What? This job pays minimum wage and you're going to give me 10 hours a week. You should be happy that I have a pulse, and that's about it.

Which is really all indicative of the larger issue:

The government(s) refuse to raise minimum wage, but companies have been consistently raising the performance expectations of minimum wage workers.

In my company, the Assistant Store Manager makes a sliver above minimum wage, yet they have an identical job description to the Store Manager.

Companies want $30/hour performance, but pay 1/3 of that.

    Thats horseshit.

I'll be doing a new employee orientation tomorrow. We hammer the new hires, especially if theyre young and green. But thats more because my industry is so heavily regulated by the federal government. Those kind of questions are even harder than what we do, and thats ridiculous.

Yeah, so communist to think that if you work you should be able to survive.

The myth of the "minimum wage burger flipper" is just that. A myth. This is not the 70s anymore. There are no "stand at a flat top grill and flip the patties every 2 minutes" job.

People with the mindset that "you didn't need an education for this job, so you deserve to lick my boot" are scum.
