What a strange movie this is.

I like Grillo a lot. I thought he was awesome in The Purge: Anarchy where he was halfway to playing The Punisher. He tries to be more comedic here, with mixed results. His blasé, sick of this shit attitude works really well, but the closer it got to slapstick the less he seems up to the task.

There's also just some really weird humor on display here. Some of it borders on sounding like 4Chan EDGELORD stuff. A line about a guy "letting out a full date rape level scream" was particularly cringey.

There are some inconsistencies and things that don't add up, which is to be expected in a time loop movie. Some seemed to have really easy fixes, though. The most glaring for me is when Grillo hires Michelle Yeoh's character to teach him how to sword fight. Yeoh is apparently a worldwide sword fighting champion, and Grillo has never handled a sword before. Yet he gets good enough to beat her in about 30 days. Really? That seems kind of insulting to people who spend their lifetime mastering the craft.

It's truly confounding why Naomi Watts is in this movie as "the ex". I mean, yes, her role is a bit deeper than that...but not nearly the caliber I would expect someone like her to take on.

Mel Gibson is all kinds of weird. Mugs every scene. Constantly chomping on a big stogie and sounding like a Bond villain.

    And Will Sasso. He's there.

Despite many issues and some obnoxious writing, I still give it a very mild yay. Even if only because I really like Frank Grillo, and it was interesting reading / seeing that this has been a pet project of his for a decade. I'm glad he finally got to do it.

Naomi Watts has been slowly drifting into Movies That Exist for a while now. It's a shame, because she's a great actress, but I think she's basically getting Amy Adams' leftovers at this point.

That bugs me. I've always thought her to be one of the best of her generation.

Not nearly enough people have talked about The Impossible. I've had nightmares about that film. Great performances.

It sounds incredible, but also harrowing in a way I'm not sure I'm up for right now.

Funny, hashtagwords, I used the word "harrowing" in my post and then deleted it in a rewrite.

Go for it. I was in same mindset. You'll never be ready for it. Just get it over with.
