The two leading wins are WILD (although Actress was already a 4-way race in which anyone sans Kirby could squeak it out by a margin), and the way the producer clearly structured the ceremony thinking it would end with a Boseman win.... lmao. I guess Soderberg wouldn't be asked back.

Wow, I thought Boseman was a lock.

Well deserved for Anthony Lecter, though!

Miranda just asked me a question and I'm obligated to respond: first movie seen in a theater? Mine is Jurassic Park. Yours?

I'm thinking it was.... Labyrinth? That's the first one I remember, anyway.

Either Bambi or Ghostbusters for me. Both traumatized me in different ways.

Happy about the Hopkins win. Well deserved.

Hopkins winning was a shocker for me. As was Francis. I liked Questlove being the DJ. The show could have used a host this year.

Hmm I think Beauty and the Beast was the first movie i remember seeing in a theater back in 1991.

Sure Close shaking her money maker was funny but I liked her giving School Daze a shoutout.

+ Happy they actually let people talk. Many of the speeches were heartfelt, emotional, and well-done since they didn't see people raising flags or giving them a countdown. The opening tracking shot to start it off was a neat idea and something I thought they'd do more with throughout.

    - Not having clips or really anything from the movies is a huge miss. Many, if not most, of the viewers have probably not seen these movies.

    - No real "celebration" of these movies either.

+ I really liked the set and seating arrangement.

    - The Memoriam felt like it was on fast-forward.

+ The "trivia" bit, most likely a written bit, was still a fun way to integrate people into doing something. I wish there was more.

+ Glenn Close doesn't give a fuck anymore about winning an Oscar... or she's just putting it all into this Sunset Blvd remake.

    - Soderbergh made a "life savings" bet and it didn't hit... What a terrible mistake with a cut to an ending that was more awkward than the Moonlight win. For all we know, Hopkins doesn't even know he won yet. What a huge miss to end it on.

Heh I also saw that in theaters. Hmm that came out before Beauty and the Beast so maybe that's actually my correct answer.

Best Picture should always be last no matter what. I think the Memoriam one was sped up because so many people died last year.

Wow, Arizona Dream, such a beautiful movie to watch in theaters.

It's kind of a tradition to have so many people missing from in memoriam, right? Pino Solanas and Jessica Walters come to mind this year. Monte Hellman, too.

    Baller.

What a cluster with the ending. I assumed it was over after Best Picture and turned it off. Only found out after the fact. What a faceplant for Soderbergh after what I found a genuinely charming work around in the age of COVID. That fuckin guy... Not sure if he can't catch a break or catches too many.

I didn't watch the ceremony, but isn't there a way to find out if a guy like Hopkins is going to show up or not? Specially after he was so vocal about his quarantine days on social media.

He was adamant that he would not be there from the beginning.

I'll need to fact check, but he was apparently willing to zoom from home and got declined. Show producers (maybe Soderbergh... who knows) wanted all people who couldn't make the show to take it from a theater or some spot with better production. I need to fact check that, but it makes sense since they all had actual cameras and no zooms.

That makes sense. I was looking forward to Soderbergh's take, but for the past few years Oscar time always finds me watching movies. The actual ceremony feels like a waste of time and I'll end up watching any good bits on social media anyway.

Haha. I remember that movie. Think I had a temper tantrum in it and my dad pulled me out of there when I through some popcorn on the ground.
