I tend to like Howard's workmanlike craft more than most, but the material/script this sloppy with such lack of nuance (and that lack almost makes me stop the film during the various child abuse scenes) needs someone more heightened or idiosyncratic (maybe David O. Russell?) rather than middlebrow somber in sensibility. 5/10

Wow, spectacularly bad movie, the likes of which we probably haven't seen in an Oscar category since Crash in 2004. Leaving aside the worthy performances by Amy Adams and Glenn Close, the film is an embarassing, patronizing drama about the world of "white trash". I don't hate Ron Howard but his handling of adult drama is always a bit like this, a collection of schmaltzy sentimental moments and preaching about morals in a way that seems emptier with each passing year. I realized this was not going to work for me as soon as I found myself hating the protagonist rather than empathizing with his plight.
