I've never seen a movie that looks like this, probably because I've never seen a Pedro Costa movie before. Darkness nearly overtakes each frame, lending a richness to the characters' faces and surrounding pockets of color. The care put into each image, the music-less sound design, and the stillness of the performances all lead me to assume I would enjoy Costa the photographer more than Costa the filmmaker (the truth is I'd rather spend an hour in a gallery viewing these images at my own pace than two hours viewing them at Costa's pace), yet as a series of tableaus it is stunning.
