So this is what happens when you combine Miyazaki's environmentalist messages (and Joe Hisaishi) with Gainax's mind twists! Children of the Sea is a film that isn't really preoccupied with plot and even characters (sans the occasional instance of teenage angst), but instead, it's main focus is to instill nature and life with a sense of mystery and wonder, culminating into a last half hour which is just a pure visual, mystical and even philosophical mind blow.

It's also one of the most gorgeous and unique anime films I've seen in years featuring character designs with very expressive faces and special attention to the eyes, which are big, very detailed and again, expressive, to the point there's a slight element of uncanny valley to them (then again, these kids are not normal). In all honesty they probably seem closer to classic Japanese paintings or to the paintings of Margaret Keane. Really nice movie.

It is. The ending reminded me a lot of The Tree of Life.
