You guys make it seem like entrepreneurship or philanthropy will just stop because Amazon Walmart and Costco. That won't happen. So lighten up.
I got the common cold and called in sick to work today partly because coronavirus is out there. Damn never ending Iowa winter...

I know small biz well. Worked for 3 independent mom n' pop companies that had less than 30 employees each. All were (at least in part) store front biz. These companies get by on the skin of their teeth even in the good or great economic times. I helped close down two of them and we were not in a recession when they closed. I can't imagine how beyond jacked up small bizs are across the country right now. Especially restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and retail (anything that depends on foot traffic). I have a friend in Berkeley who is desperately trying to save her vintage clothing store that she has run for a decade. She can't get that PPP loan now. Even before she couldn't get through bank red tape. She's basically begging for $$$ from her social media network to put in a paypal acct. I realize she is an anecdotal example, but this is happening to fuggin' EVERYONE in small biz right now.Quoting Dukefrukem (view post)

I've been trying to do my little part to help local businesses stay afloat by, among other things, ordering beer delivery from the local brewery. Methinks by the end of this, Jason, owner of Wild Mind, is going to be on my Christmas Card list.
Losing is like fertilizer: it stinks for a while, then you get used to it. (Tony, Hibbing)
I said it somewhere forever ago that when a recession hits, that a lot of these weird shops and breweries are going to get hit hard. There are SO many breweries in Denver.
If Dry Dock fails, buy all the guns & ammo you can and get the hell out of dodge.

Just picked up Erte for dinner and saw Dangerous Man Brewery just down the street. That could be a dangerous combo, me thinks.Quoting bac0n (view post)
“What we are dealing with here is a perfect engine, er... an eating machine. It's really a miracle of evolution. All this machine does is swim and eat and make little sharks and that's all.”
It's just speculation at the moment, but some are saying every concert here might get cancelled for the rest of the year, jeopardizing Nashville's economy and potentially closing venues permanently. And while I'm still employed at a small business, I can't not fear about how long that will last.
I truly believe that after this is over, we're gonna be going back to nothing but scorched Earth, and it leaves me feeling hopeless right now.

I don't think that's true, but I do think it's going to be a couple of years before we reach normal life again.
I doubt we get back to normal, and I wonder how long it is before the next pandemic hits.

Wife and I hosted a zoom workout class this morning and raised $950 going to COVID19 relief.
It was so successful we may do it weekly.
What do you mean?Quoting MadMan (view post)
It will be quite some time before people feel safe in public places again. Also as others have noted a lot of small businesses are screwed. Most things such as sporting events and movies have been canceled or pushed back. I work in grocery and it is going to take us quite a while to restock everything, and I wonder how many people who do online orders now will just stick with it. Not to mention movie theaters-I saw that AMC and some other big chains are in trouble as well.Quoting Grouchy (view post)

But it's on her Instagram story if you're interested and I'm uploading the video to her youtube page.
I posted this question in the music thread a few weeks ago, but does anyone have any experience with buying a music license for broadcasting? A few sites charge about $1000/year for it but it's all no-name music stuff. Wondering what it takes to get a BMI license.
We are thinking about hosting classes live on youtube but they can taken down the instant music is played (which is weird, because when I record them and post them AFTER class they stay up)
We are getting around it by using Zoom but the music quality is shit.
I know, but I meant about "the next pandemic". Warnings about the evolution of SARS viruses date back to 2007 from what I've found online. It took over a decade after we realized of the danger and did nothing for it to materialize. I don't know if this is going to happen again anytime soon. At least I hope it doesn't.Quoting MadMan (view post)

Not literally, but in the figurative sense. By the time we're all allowed to interact in public again, venues and movie theaters will have gone out of business and become a thing of the past. Everyone will have gotten so used to being inside for so long, and companies will be used to their new ways of generating income, that there is no point to going back.Quoting Dukefrukem (view post)
The more news outlets say call this the new normal, the more true it becomes and the more the old world dies.

Going to the movies already felt anachronistic twenty years ago, if not earlier. In this regard, the pandemic is only accelerating a trend that started in the 1950s when a large portion of the North American population fled to the suburbs.Quoting Ivan Drago (view post)

For as long as movies are around, there will always be some movie theaters. It's a multi-billion dollar industry for theaters. Indies may transition more to streaming, but even still...
First of all, there's nothing sacred about theatrical exhibition; it's not immanent in the medium itself. The only reason the Nickelodeons beat out Edison's Kinetoscope is that they could show films to more people at the same time and make more money in admissions. Pre-COVID, theatrical distribution for a wide variety of films was still viable in the major urban centres; however, it's questionable how many people will continue to turn up for indie films if they perceive it as a health risk, although distributors like Netflix will still probably use Oscar-qualifying runs to generate prestige and promotion for selected items (e.g., The Irishman). In the suburbs and beyond, theatrical distribution was only viable at all because Marvel superhero movies generate massive amounts of revenue for distributors, which translates into popcorn sales for exhibitors. Although exhibitors still need program pictures to keep their doors open during the non-summer months, by and large, non-superhero movies aren't economically viable in the sticks and haven't been for some time.Quoting Ezee E (view post)
