That rationale doesn't make sense and is based so deeply in contempt for others, I cannot comprehend it.

The 1% have the American middle class bent over a lawn chair and are slamming them harder than ever before, but whispering in their ear "it wouldn't hurt so much if the poor people would just get you some lube"

    LOL not until 2023 tho.

Yeah. This is a Hobson's choice. Imagine a society where you had the freedom to make a "choice" that isn't forced upon you.

(Nevermind the people who can't, for whatever reason, do more than unskilled blue collar.)

This is the matter at hand.

Nobody in politics or media is talking about it, but what do you think happens if "stay at home" goes beyond April? There's a lot of low wage workers with no savings in a country with no safety net who (a) won't be able to pay rent and (b) won't be able to afford basic necessities. Like food.

    So what happens then?

The workaday exploitation that everyone more or less took for granted for a generation or more has a huge bearing on what happens now, and over the next 3 months.
I dont know why that's funny. It's still happening. Is it because it's happening in 3 years?

I guess all those low wage workers will need to find equivalent low wage jobs that land in ESSENTIAL SERVICES bucket. The gas station down the street from me needs people to pump gas.
Is the bistro hippie guy too good to take up that job? Pump gas or don't eat. Hobson's choice.

I don't know. Nobody knows. This thread is exhausting.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

Because you're using something that hasn't happened to defend a bad policy now.

Well, that, and $30k a year would still be a tough time in a major city.

Unless you think rents in Boston will magically drop below $1000/month in the next 3 years.

I don't know. Nobody knows. This thread is exhausting.
You're right. Nobody knows. But do you think it'll be maybe ... I dunno ... be a problem?

Because tbh these are my greatest fears right now: Sluggish Federal government meets the unwashed masses and loses. Hundreds of thousands dead. Food riots in major cities on the 4th of July. Suspended elections in November.

Maybe we slink by. Maybe. But what's happening now isn't giving me hope.

The "non-essential" businesses in my neighborhood went dark and boarded their windows 2 weeks ago. Friday night 9pm and there's no traffic. Nobody on the streets. Eerily quiet.

The local government went from "shelter in place" to limiting the hours of "essential businesses." What happens when some of those shutdown? When one grocery store remains open and needs to supply 10,000 people? When the supply chain gets fucked up?

I have money. I can afford to pay. But what do I do when there isn't anything left to buy?

I think it will be time to panic when we start seeing pockets of civil unrest.

Thats when people better get their guns handy.

Also I'm taking this as a sign that Scar's real name is Stuart Redman and when this happens we should all start heading toward the Wisconsin-Minnesota Free Zone

Just saw on the news, Banks here are waving all fees, can defer payments 30, 60, 90 days AND are offering $5000 0% interest loans with no payments for 90s days.

    There's relief out there.

Colorado is reporting that the quarantines are working. Traffic is down 60%, even moreso at the tunnel that goes from Metro Area -> Mountains (Eisenhower Tunnel). Cases are doubling every five days instead of every 1-2. There's an acknowledgement that there's probably double the cases out there... but we are trending in the right direction and gives hospitals the time they need.

Flattening the curve IS doing what it's suppose to be doing.

Just a patience game to get through April I think <hope>.

A few other symptoms people have mentioned in common, sleeplessness. This virus works its ass off to fight sleep, and will work the mind to near hallucinatory horror dream states.

Loss of taste and smell. Its weird.

Increased heart rate. This one is important, as it seems to be an early indicator. Several other people we talked to said it felt like they were having heart palpitations or concern of heart attack. Can confirm, its fucked up to be laying in bed, no anxiety, and heart pounding like you just took a sprint. I was relieved when other told us same symptom.

As much as I disagree with him about movies sometimes (helloooo Invisible Man) Irish really gets the fundamental fears and flaws with our system. I think everyone is in kumbaya mode right now, but there's going to be some serious economic shit that happens in the next months (years?) that are going to be under-reported by the MSM. The stock market will most likely gradually tick back up, but this is like a 10.0 earthquake that rattles the entire country (world, really, but most of the rest of the world is "socialist" enough to have more safety nets) and when that earthquake hits, it hits the bottom 20% the most. The bottom 10% to 20% will probably come out dinged up but ok. The bottom 5% to 10% might be put into some mighty shitty debt w/ either high interest credit cards or even higher interest payday loans (which should be illegal). The bottom 1% to 5%? I'm just not sure. They might wind up homeless. And that's what bothers me. None of this is even their fault. Can America handle another one of these crises in five years? Ten years? I think if it happens again soon, expect the bottom 10% to seriously bottom out into mass homelessness and abject poverty. And that is when the shit will really hit the fan.

Test results came back from wife's co-worker. She was positive for COVID-19. So wife is probably almost over it, and I've just begun.
Shit. Hope things turn out ok.

Japan's numbers are probably unreliable: Until a few days ago, the country was still planning to go forward with the Olympics and likely hasn't yet reported the full numbers, just as they tried to hide the full extent of the Fukushima catastrophe.
    That...doesn't surprise me.

Yes let's all invest. It's a great time to invest right now! The stock market is down 30% and you lost your fucking job and might be living on the street but, hey, you never know!
I'm sorry I laughed at this because as a grocery employee wondering if I will get sick because I need to work I have to laugh instead of crying.

This is, like... the most tone-deaf thing I've read in a while. No wonder the US is such a bizarre place.
Just hang around the online discussions about healthcare in the US. Actually don't read those they are very depressing and not covered by most healthcare plans in the US.

Yikes. Did you test positive? Or are you just assuming you have it? I talked to my sister a few days ago (who tested positive around 14 days ago) and said it wasn't that bad. She said she had a common flu last year and felt worse. Her covid-19 symptoms were fever (102 degrees) and a cough. But she's felt worse.

You. Are. ESSENTIAL. You are on the frontlines. Stacking bananas and cans of creamed corn. The face of a warrior. The enemy is stealth but deadly. Wear a mask and gloves. Godspeed, soldier.
