I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

This is the first Laika movie that I have very little interest in seeing. Hopefully there's more than meets the eye.

I thought this was wonderful. Incredible animation, as always, but I was really impressed by the overall filmmaking craft here; the film features some great editing, often used for gags (like Ivan points out in his review) but also e.g. some great match-cuts that transition the film from one leg of the journey to another. As now seems to be Laika tradition, the film is in dialogue with film history and genre (here, adventure films and historical epics) and then subverts expectations in satisfying ways (with each character basically realizing they're better than the roles the genre narrative has assigned them).

But, seriously, incredible animation. The second action sequence, on the boat, is going to be the action scene to top this summer. I'd like to see all these blockbusters even try.
Giving up in 2020. Who cares.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this, mostly because of the incredible writing. These animated blockbusters tend to feel the same after a while, with similar characters and story beats, but Missing Link seems like a step in a completely different direction, funnier than most Pixar flicks (which plenty of sight gags that wouldn't feel out of place in a Buster Keaton flick) and incredibly imaginative and entertaining. Unfortunately, the box office wasn't there to support it.

Least of Laika's films, which just goes to show high the studio's bar is to me. In comparison to their previous works, this lacks an extra world-building bit and/or emotional impact that would elevate it further. But as a visually spectacular, Looney Tunes-inflected action comedy, it remains a consistent delight to the end. 7/10

    Laika's ranking:

    1. Kubo and the Two Strings
    2. Paranorman
    3. Coraline
    4. The Boxtrolls
    5. Missing Link
    Midnight Run (1988) - 9
    The Smiling Lieutenant (1931) - 8.5
    The Adventures of Robinhood (1938) - 8
    Sisters (1973) - 6.5
    Shin Godzilla (2016) - 7.5

It was very charming! As previously mentioned, the movie is very funny and the rapport of Jackman and Galafianakis makes the movie.
