1917 comes out in wide release Friday. I'm guessing the awards buzz will help it out. I can't recall the last thing Sam Mendes did besides James Bond movies.
Away We Go (which I like) and Revolutionary Road (which I don't).
Ratings on a 1-10 scale for your pleasure:

    Top Gun: Maverick - 8
    Top Gun - 7
    McCabe & Mrs. Miller - 8
Crimes of the Future - 8
    Videodrome - 9
    Valley Girl - 8
    Summer of '42 - 7
In the Line of Fire - 8

Love that Skarsgård got it for Chernobyl. Well deserved.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

All in all, I'm quite pleased with the awards. Sure, there are some duds like Rocketman, but I never expected Missing Link to win its category or Pitt to get supporting - those were nice surprises. And I really, really need to see Parasite before everyone starts spoiling it for me.

Whatever studio handled Clemency really dropped the ball.

I have no idea what A24 is doing on their end for awards. It wouldn't surprise me if Uncut Gems/Farewell/Lighthouse all end up with zero nominations. They had no idea what to do with Waves.

With how consistently well it has been doing across all awards bodies and guilds, I feel the Best Picture is for OUATIH's to lose.

Agreed. I've said it since August. It has the perfect pedigree for Oscars. A movie about Hollywood, beloved director, hits the tech awards.

It's also very much an actor's movie and actors make up the bulk of the Academy. Celebrating (and eulogizing) the star wattage that dominated the 20th Century box office, and has arguably been on life support in the 21st Century (replaced by the IP pedigree of franchise movies). You could say the same thing about The Irishman, but I think the length and the fact that it's Netflix might hurt it in the long run. It also might not be as popular w/ industry types as w/ critics (Joker might be almost as popular w/ industry types). OUATIH seems to be mostly beloved by the biggest voting group in the Academy (boomers). Even my dad loved it and he usually avoids Tarantino movies.

Before y'all get too excited, just remember: Even if Tarantino's film wins best picture, he's still gonna lose best director to Sam fuckin' Mendes. Who already has a best director trophy. For American Beauty.

I don't see Hollywood winning BP, either. However I agree that QT is not winning director.

I don't think Tarantino will win.

"Once Upon a Time..." might be a movie about Hollywood but it's also another QT celebration of trash, and an R-rated film with an insanely violent ending. (There have been a slew of R-rated winners in the last 2 decades, but none of them have been nearly as violent as OUATIH.)

Plus, he's said some aggressively petty shit over the years, some of it on stage at award shows, and the Academy has a loooooong memory.

I was going to go off of QT being a huge annoying nerd, but what Irish said also makes sense.

Definitely the threatening underdog, per its very surprising nomination for SAG's best ensemble.

I think Bong Joon-Ho wins Director and Tarantino gets his 3rd (?) screenplay award.

Don't underestimate the Academy's love of tracking shots stitched together in post to look like very long takes (see Gravity and Birdman). The only thing going against Mendes' favour is that he's not a Mexican citizen and therefore giving him a trophy can't be interpreted by the media as some kind of political statement.

OUATIH might get through the tier system. Then again 1917 might be a safer bet for that (I haven't seen it). OUATIH seems like the type of movie that will get on a lot of top choice ballots but will also not get on any of them at all.
