Wait, what? Surely that can't be true. Do you mean nominated for editing?
Nominated for editing, yeah. I'm assuming Irish is talking about that old(ish) Variety article.

But the relationship between Best Editing and Best Picture is known. Every single Best Picture winner since 1980 (when Ordinary People won, without an editing nom) was also nominated for editing, and the majority also won. Up until the time of the Variety article, I mean, which E pointed out above me.

Also, I'd love to see another Missing Link upset like the Globes. The reaction to that was hilarious.

Yes! Meant to say nominated (thanks for catching that)

    The list I saw was:

"The Life of Emile Zola" (1937)
    "Hamlet" (1948)
    "Marty" (1955)
    "Tom Jones" (1963)
"A Man for All Seasons" (1966)
    "The Godfather Part II" (1974)
    "Annie Hall" (1977)
    "Ordinary People" (1980)
    "Birdman" (2014)

Incredibly pissed off that Apollo 11 was snubbed for Best Documentary.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

11 noms for one of the worst movies of the year.
I mean.. I hated the Irishman too but it's nowhere near the likes of Polaroid, 47 Meters Down Unchaged and 6 Underground.

Lemme put it this way: It's the "Bye Bye Man" of mainstream studio films

The documentary branch, if I were to guess, voted against Apollo 11, because it didn't have much to gain from the Oscars, whereas the other movies will actually get seen.

Same thing happened last year I think.

Also, shoulda mentioned: I'm pissed "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" got shut out because France chose "Les Miserables" over it.
This is often a problem with the Foreign Film category. Adolfo Aristarain made history when he successfully arranged to pass his 1991 film A Place in the World as the Uruguayan candidate because Argentina had selected The Dark Side of the Heart instead. The movie ended up being nominated for Uruguay and then taken off the ballot when the ruse was discovered.

I like Tarantino and I often defend his aesthetic and narrative choices, but Hollywood doesn't deserve an editing award.

If you hated The Irishman you don't like cinema. *runs*

Like, zero noms for Sandler or Murphy but 2 for Scarjo.
Good god. What a waste of everyone's time the oscars are

I thought her performances in both movies were awards-worthy.

Also, The Lion King’s vfx nomination is only further proof that the Academy are cowards.

Scarlett was more than deserving, IMO. Her presence in Jojo Rabbit is probably her best work in years. People are just critiquing her personality and not her performance when they say she shouldn't have been nominated.

It's Kathy Bates that should be out for a movie that nobody will remember six months from now.

The Actress nominations were considered the likely five for quite a while. Awkwafina would've been considered a surprise if she swooped in on Theron or Erivo.

I think I'm most pissed about Murphy getting overlooked for Dolemite.

    11 for Joker seems excessive.

I enjoyed both Joker and The Irishman, but I don't think I feel they were really Oscar worthy. Maybe some minor Oscars. *shrug*

Awkwafina all the way. I think the industry could use a few surprises.

I resent Scarjo's noms because she's a mediocre actress and this level of recognition makes it harder to make the case.

ETA: See also Waititi, who is a good comic writer but also a limited one; Rian Johnson, because telling a bad writer they're good never works out; Phillips, because egg avis on twitter are super gloaty right now.

Just realized that Willem Defoe wasn't nominated for The Lighthouse. Fuck this clown show forever.

btw, I bitched earlier in the thread about distribution & people not able to see Oscar nominated movies before awards night.

Here's a good list of where some stuff streams, including documentary & foreign film picks:

Yeh can we talk about that too. I heard good things about JoJo but, Best Picture?? Would have liked to see something like Booksmart or Under the Silver Lake.
