Well, weak if you're like the Academy and refuse to look beyond the narrow window they always look through. I get that there's more to it on a publicity front than just quality, but there's tons of good options that even they could sleep at night having chosen: Awkwafina, Lupita Nyong'o (who's already in the damn club!), Elisabeth Moss, Ana de Armas, Julianne Moore, just to name a few. It's frustrating that their taste is so unimaginative and tied to their misguided idea of "prestige." And I liked Zellweger and Judy, they're just not near the top of my list.

I'm just always bemused by the way it often seems to work, that sometime in August it was decided that this belongs to Zellweger and that nothing's happened to change that decision.

Hoping there's a surprise in the final results, like you say. There was last year.
Judy's been baffling me all year for the exact reason you shared. She's not exactly getting huge kudos at the award shows as far as applause and ovations go.

I was even at Telluride and there weren't that many raves on even her performance. She was given a "Tribute" but there was far more interest in Marriage Story, Uncut Gems, and Ford V Ferrari. Once Renee's tribute/Q&As were over, Judy was at half capacity.

I wish I could comment on Zellweger's performance, but there is no way in hell I am watching another straight down the line celebrity biopic. Walk Hard should have banished them to the shadow realm.

If you've seen the trailer, you've seen the movie. A lot of mugging and stilted singing. I'm not a huge Judy Garland fan, though its clearly a vividly inauthentic biopic that doesn't deserve her name. It really sucks that Zellweger is going to win a second Oscar for YET ANOTHER wince-worthy performance.

I met Renee Z on set one time for the movie Appaloosa. I would do extra work between jobs. She was probably one of the nicest big name celebs I saw on set. She went around to every single extra and thanked them for helping out. It was really sweet. The only other person who was similar was Kevin Costner.

I wonder if some politics is involved like she is well liked in the biz but was unceremoniously kicked out for being too old or a has been or whatever and later dissed on by the Celebrity Industrial Complex for bad plastic surgery. Stuff like that matters to Oscar voters (her peers, basically).

They care about and like her, definitely. I doubt anyone in Hollywood cares about Judy (2019). This is her "comeback."

Big lol at Joker's Casting win. Now Parasite's Original Screenplay win seems pretty much assured, which produces this hilarious reaction while Bong was making a joke in his acceptance speech:

    Midnight Run (1988) - 9
    The Smiling Lieutenant (1931) - 8.5
    The Adventures of Robinhood (1938) - 8
    Sisters (1973) - 6.5

Don't get the casting for Joker, other JP getting cast, but that seems like more Philips and JP teaming up first and getting financing. I would give it to OUATIH (finding lookalikes who could actually act was prolly a pain in the butt for a casting director) or maybe Little Women, Parasite, 1917.

"Parasite" is a lock for International but I think people overestimate it's chances otherwise. (The talk around it feels like a replay of "Crouching Tiger's" run 20 years ago.)

I'm very tired this morning and if I had the energy, I'd put it more tactfully, but:

    - The Academy almost always reflects a certain ... let's call it ... "American bias." (When I say "bias" I really mean racism. I'm talking about racism right now. Racism, in case that wasn't clear.)

    - Pretty sure Bong & company are not in the unions, which lessens their chances.

    - Original Screenplay will go to Tarantino (again!) as a runner up prize. They'll likely fuck him over in other categories, per usual.

Hope I'm wrong and looking forward to being pleasantly surprised this time next week!

I don't know why you have to be so nebulous. Your opinions are an impenetrable fog. From within, a gull cries out mournfully. The salt air tightens the skin on my face. But lo! A ship's lantern is spied! I hear the creaking of the mast, the whipping of the sails! This ship shade haunts me! The torment of a thousand sopping, sponge-slick souls! Relentless they follow...I'll never escape...!

This moment has been brought to you by Robert Eggers.
"How is education supposed to make me feel smarter? Besides, every time I learn something new, it pushes some old stuff out of my brain. Remember when I took that home wine-making course and forgot how to drive?"

The main reasons the Oscars exist is to boost the image of the American film industry and promote mid-budget films that otherwise wouldn't have a chance to become blockbusters. When the award has gone to a foreign film in the past, it's invariably an international co-production in English between the US and another country (the UK or France). Moreover, Parasite's US distributor, Neon, is an indie outfit founded in 2017 that lacks the muscle of a conglomerate like Universal, which is handling 1917 (the presumptive Oscar winner). Moreover, Neon's co-founder has explicitly stated that the company wants to target the under-45 demographic, whereas the Academy skews old. Even if racism didn't exist, Parasite would not win best picture or best director.
    Just because...
The Fabelmans (Steven Spielberg, 2022) mild
Petite maman (Céline Sciamma, 2021) mild
The Banshees of Inisherin (Martin McDonagh, 2022) mild

The last book I read was...
The Complete Short Stories by Mark Twain

Just realized that they couldn’t even manage to work out theater showings for The Irishman or Marriage Story for AMC’s Best Picture Showcase this weekend. That’s pretty lame. :\

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?
