I heard Alec Baldwin on Howard Stern talking about how he knows producers that control blocks of votes because elder Academy members grandfathered in from working on movies from the 60s and such that don't keep up ask who they should vote for. Not surprising, but also even more disheartening. Also studios have to actively campaign to win. It is all pretty sick.
Wait, there's a cabal of producers that vote for numerous elderly Academy voters who are too checked out on new movies to vote themselves? That's some Under the Silver Lake shit right there! Do they do their Oscar voting between an omelet and a blowjob?

Frozen II just got snubbed best animated feature, so I no longer have a dog in the race to root for. My awards season ended early this year. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

News outlets like Variety are all writing sentences such as "women directors have been shut out of the Best Director race". I'm honestly confused - do they genuinely believe something like that is happening or is it just a line?

I believe so myself, but not that angrily. Best Director branch have always been a boys club, and it takes a muscular war genre for a woman to to win one. I still can't quite believe Gerwig's rather miraculous Lady Bird nom, for an unabashedly female coming-of-age film. Personally I think she deserves a nom even more, and among the top 5 this year, for the way she refigures Little Women into something fresh and exciting, but I've always felt the film would be perceived unfairly as too "girly" for the branch. Would have been a nice welcome surprise, but I didn't expect it much.

Good, because the other five films are much better.

Happy for Parasite's 6 noms (including Editing and Production Design, which signal some real strength), and first noms for Antonio Banderas and Scarlett Johansson, in which the latter has double noms!

Interesting: Honeyland getting both doc and foreign, and OUATIH missing Best Editing...
    Midnight Run (1988) - 9

I'm old enough and jaded enough that the Academy should never surprise me but every year they do.

They were spoiled for choice and still made some of the dumbest, blandest selections possible.

Like, zero noms for Sandler or Murphy but 2 for Scarjo.

11 noms for one of the worst movies of the year.

There's Todd again, sitting in somebody else's chair.

Screenplay continues to be used as a "runners up" dumping ground.

Yet despite obvious omissions, there's 4-5 solid movies in Picture, Documentary, and Foreign (aka "International"). Can't remember the last time that happened.

Pretty annoying that They Shall Not Grow Old missed the filing deadline for the previous year's awards, and obviously can't claim to be a 2019 film for this year's.

-Apollo 11 missing Documentary is truly surprising.
-Hate on Joker as much as you want, but those tech awards are deserving.
-Haven't seen Little Women, so I can't comment, but definitely over the checkbox approach that people have in mind for acting and directing nominations. I still feel that most of Film Twitter and critics are hypocrites when it comes down to this, and just going for clicks to their sites. How many disregarded the Joker score until last Sunday when they saw that the composer was a female?
-If Film Twitter wants to really dig into diversity and "traditional old Academy picks," it's the Marriage Story/Two Popes/Little Women that should be sought after (some of which are still good, but no racism)
-Short films have the best titles.
-Once Upon A Time is winning this thing despite the editing miss.

Read this morning that only 10 films have won Picture without winning Editing, which worried me. I'm pulling for Tarantino this year which is a sure sign he will lose.

    That said:

I think they'll split the major awards across 4 different films.

Either that or fucking "Jojo" will sweep because it's the safest, dumbest choice.

Also, shoulda mentioned: I'm pissed "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" got shut out because France chose "Les Miserables" over it.

I'm pretty sure it's nominated for editing wherethere was a long streak of nominated Editing = Picture hits.

33 years where the Best Picture was also in best editing (ended in 2014.) From 2015-2019, it has started again.

So, pretty important. But not necessary to win. Winner of Best Editing/Picture together hasn't happened since Argo.
