Paul Thomas Anderson's High School Movie

Paul Thomas Anderson Sets 1970s High School Movie For 2020 Production

The untitled project, centered on a high school student, is planning to go into production next year.

Paul Thomas Anderson is returning to his San Fernando Valley roots to make a new film set in the 1970s, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The untitled film will be centered on a high school student who is also a successful child actor. Anderson will write, direct and produce the project through his Ghoulardi Film Company banner. Sources say casting is underway to find the lead and the project features a multitude of roles and could be ensemble in nature or have intersecting storylines.

Sources say Anderson's project, named in the California Film Commission's list of 13 films shooting in the state next year, is planning to go into production in February 2020. Representatives for Anderson declined to comment.

Three of Anderson's previous films — 1997's Boogie Nights, 1999's Magnolia and 2002's Punch-Drunk Love — are set in the San Fernando Valley, the northern stretch of Los Angeles that encompasses communities such as Sherman Oaks, Encino, Tarzana, and is the area where the filmmaker grew up.

Anderson's last film, 2017's period drama Phantom Thread, set within the couture industry in 1950s London, was the first time the filmmaker made a movie outside of the U.S. The movie was nominated for six Oscars, winning for costume design.

I remember vaguely something about PTA and his kid, so I searched and this must be the film he was talking about last year (Paul Thomas Anderson Is Working On A Family-Friendly Script With His Eight-Year-Old Daughter), which further cannot make me imagine what it's gonna look like.

Paul Thomas Anderson, David Fincher, and Andrew Dominick have three films in production. All is good in the world.

Love the cast. Automatic #1 most anticipated. Licorice Pizza may or may not be a better title than Soggy Bottom.

They are both terrible titles. Still......

Yep, that's Alana Haim all right.

    Looks irritating.

Huh. Good trailer. I didn't expect the movie to be so centered around its leads. I had a similar reaction to the Phantom Thread trailer (ooohh, so this is about a relationship...) but back then we had Day-Lewis and Krieps instead of Haim and Hoffman. The trusting part of me knows PTA can get good performances out of anyone -- the cynical part worries the leads are borderline stunt-casted. And this is probably because I'm getting older, but for me coming-of-age love stories are a bit passé.

    ^ this

I'll go a little farther and say I like the freshness of the 2 "kids," but disliked everything else. (Bradley Cooper? No.)

Somebody on twitter said this looks like PTA remaking "Almost Famous" and that feels about right.

Feels destined to be thought of as one of his minor but genial efforts upon release and then reconsidered a decade from now.
"How is education supposed to make me feel smarter? Besides, every time I learn something new, it pushes some old stuff out of my brain. Remember when I took that home wine-making course and forgot how to drive?"
