It's anime, so of course the soundtrack is great. But it must be noted how true-to-life this film is musically. We see the notes on the page, and the maintenance of the instruments. We hear the band warming up, the pitchiness of the rehearsals, and then -- in a key character moment -- we feel the transcendence of a great performance. There's a difference between "playing the notes" and making music, and as hard a concept as that may be to articulate, it's clearly something Naoko Yamada understands.
