It hits all the scheduled beats and appropriate call backs that one expects from a Han Solo origin film. Very little risks taken and a serviceable story.
So... a Ron Howard film.
It exists. I didn't find it as offensive or eyes-rolley as Rogue One.

Mild yay. It is a fun movie with undeniable high-ish points. The back and forth between Solo and Chewie, Glover did a good Lando (his first line is spot on Dee Williams), some of the action (The Conveyex heist is really breathtaking with dynamic and dizzying pov shots). Less interesting after that scene ends, picks up a bit towards the end.
There's a surprise cameo at the end which is right on the edge of "oh my God" and "haha that's fucking awful".

Yeah, I know about the cameo, and just hearing about it is fucking obnoxious.
Are there any lightsabers in this movie? I guess maybe spoiler for those that don't want to know.
I found out about the cameo just from Googling the movie's name (I think I was curious about the length or something) and a Vanity Fair article popped up saying "SOLO: HOW IS [character's name and mortality] IN THIS MOVIE?", which once, you click on it, is actually titled (likely changed to) "Solo: The Hidden Implications Behind That Crazy Star Wars Cameo"..
But as someone who's probably less excited for this than I've been for any Star Wars movie in my lifetime, it's alright, but I also got the idea in my head that there was going to be very little spoilable about it going in, so that would help in not needing to jump on it opening day. But there ya go, that got spoiled for me (completely without context, mind you) within hours of being out publicly, and even not from like a dick in a comments sections either. Yay!
Last 11 things I really enjoyed:
Speed Racer (Wachowski/Wachowski, 2008)
Safe (Haynes, 1995)
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (Parker, 1999)
Beastie Boys Story (Jonze, 2020)
Bad Trip (Sakurai, 2020)
What's Up Doc? (Bogdanovich, 1972)
Diva (Beineix, 1981)
Delicatessen (Caro/Jeunet, 1991)
The Hunger (Scott, 1983)
Pineapple Express (Green, 2008)
Chungking Express (Wong, 1994)
Careful, this spoils which character you will see for 10 seconds at the end of the movie, but it's so dumb and throwaway that it's probably no big deal.Quoting Skitch (view post)

Actually, Wats was wrong, that's way more eye-rolly than anything in Rogue One.

This was just kind of ‘there’. Chewie is the highlight. Give me Rogue One over this any day of the week and twice on Sunday’s.

Is it weird that I care about spoilers for this or Infinity War?
I spoiled myself on Infinity War because I just don’t care all that much. It’s all story mechanics anyway designed to carry the brand forward. Whereas I’ll avoid all discussion of something like Hereditary or... well, there’s no other movie I’m that interested coming out soon, but you get the point.

Sorry, my post was supposed to say "is it weird that I don't care about spoilers for these movies." Because I totally do not.
Movie theater right next to my apartment has 12 showings of Deadpool 2 a day in its second week. Solo is in its 4th day: 6 showings a day. Koreans don’t give a crap about Star Wars. This is Marvel country.

It's fun. FUN. All I can say is fun, because other than [], I found all of this moved quickly and with solid drive, if not a little clunky in moments that we checked out new places- but everyone doing a pretty good job of enjoying themselves. So again... its fun. I wasn't expecting some kind of epic origin for Han and I'm glad the film didn't try to do that.
And on that note, I had a very different reaction to this movie compared to The Last Jedi-
my immediate thought was that I wanted to see it again. Some of the action sequences gave me chills. It delivered when it needed to and brought me back as a fan of the universe. I was shitting all over this movie when Lord/Miller got fired []
That might be the dumbest scene I've ever seen.Quoting Morris Schæffer (view post)
I had this feeling for a moment too- and it think it's because everything with the Falcon worked really well. And to me, this felt more like a Star Wars film than Rogue One ever did. Way more humor. But everything else was kind of just bleh. The opening felt rushed. As did the three years they needed to fill for Solo's FRONT story- I mean, wasn't that what we were here for? Everything with Chewie I liked. Everything with Paul Bettany I hated. Is he the only gangster in the universe with a crack squad of only 8 people protecting him? Donald Glover nailed Lando. It made me want to watch Return the Jedi immediately. Definitely the stand out. Alden Ehrenreich was OK. Emily Clark continues to prove my point that she is not a good actress outside of GoT.Quoting Zac Efron (view post)
Up there for sure. Even when you take into account the tempestuous shoot, it feels wrong wrong wrong and horribly unneeded. If anything, it proves yet again these new sw movies cannot leave the past alone and forge their own path. []Quoting Dukefrukem (view post)

Young enough where the events of Episode I clearly happened way before the events in this movie. And we know that Episode I took place 32 years before the Battle of Yavin.Quoting Skitch (view post)
I've seen this reaction a number of times now already, and this reaction is honestly precisely why I hate this stupid cameo. It assumes that everyone who sees this movie is going to be familiar with the cartoons, in which it was revealed that character had come back. But I'm almost certain most people aren't going to be familiar with that at all, and so are just going to be confused as hell, and wonder when the movie even takes place (even though given Han's age, it'd be impossible to take place prior to Episode I, as that'd make him older than Vader), seeing as in the films he's only ever appeared in Episode I, and was clearly killed off in that same movie.Quoting Skitch (view post)
As of this movie, the medium no longer stands on its own, and expects everyone to do their homework and keep up with Star Wars media outside of the movies as well. Hence why I referred to it as being obnoxious before.
Sorry for so many questions but I haven't seen the movie yet.

well if I learned anything from The Last Jedi...

I just looked this up because I know Disney jettisoned the EU with only a handful of exceptions, and sure enough, straight from Wikipedia: "This restructuring left the Star Wars theatrical films, the Clone Wars animated film, and the 2008 Clone Wars animated TV series as the only material embodying the official Star Wars canon."Quoting Skitch (view post)
It's him and it's canon.
Giving up in 2020. Who cares.
