I don't disagree with anything you said, with the exception of the last line and only because...do we know what the budget of the movie is? I haven't been able to find it. If they didn't go crazy with the budget it could still be okay. Maybe not critically, but financially.Quoting Irish (view post)
Flanagan sure effed up the ending to Haunting of Hill House, but I still consider myself a big fan.

What does budget have to do with it?Quoting Skitch (view post)
I've never had issues with his endings. I think he's an incredibly solid director all around, and his movies for the most part tend to stand out in the genre as especially exceptional compared to most, at least as far as modern horror is concerned. My biggest issue with him, which isn't so much an issue as it is something I wish he'd incorporate better, is that I feel his movies could often do with better music. If his movies had really infectious horror themes that just really latched onto you, not too dissimilar from classic horror movies of old, I'd say his movies would have the potential to be modern classics in their own right. (Honestly, this isn't even a gripe I have exclusively with him, but with a lot of films nowadays, most notably all the comic book movies we see, but that's sort of another discussion entirely...) As is though, they're still great, but it's this aspect that always makes me feel like they're missing something, and I just can't help but feel that the music department is precisely what that something is.Quoting Irish (view post)
Looks like a much more respectful use of Kubrick than Spielberg did in RP1. Color me intrigued.
The severed arm perfectly acquitted itself, because of the simplicity of its wishes and its total lack of doubt.

How will it "come out on the short end" if it didnt cost much to make?Quoting Irish (view post)
I meant come up short in the audience's mind.Quoting Skitch (view post)
I also would suspect that if the budget is lower, the writer/director would have more freedom.
The higher the budget, the more studio interference.0

They seem to be hard selling Danny's return to the Overlook, but...anyone read the book? []
