Genuinely confused by the love of The Conjuring 2 here. It’s so inferior to the first, but also jus flat out bad.
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"
"Rick...it's a flamethrower."
What did you find bad? Other than the nun. And the singing.
The story arch was almost identical to the first movie.
The scenes with the Warren’s often came off as cheesy and overly sentimental. I liked that the film wanted to show more of their deep bond and love, but it was high school romance level cheese.
Logic problems such as Lorraine not telling Ed that she had seen him die, and not telling him that he just painted the image of the presence that she saw involved in his death.
Overuse of images and symbols that are already overused. As I mentioned earlier the whole evil nun thing is done to death, but then the upturning crosses, “possessed” child, etc. Which on themselves aren’t all bad if something new and exciting is done with them, but it wasn’t.
The first film had such startling stuff, and some of the most frightening was the subtler stuff. When Lili Taylor goes down to the basement and a ball gets tossed in her direction from behind a cabinet. The game of Clap clap. Hell, wen one of the daughters sees a figure behind the door and the camera rests on that black space - there isn’t anything there to us, the audience, but her fear is so palpable that we convince ourselves maybe we see something.
The first film was freaking brilliant horror filmmmaking, whereas the second felt like paint-by-numbers commercial horror. I expected much more from that creative team.
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"
"Rick...it's a flamethrower."
Ha. I actually agree with the upturning crosses. That annoyed me a little.
I guess I didn't really think about logic at all, I was too concerned for my sanity during it. The Conjuring has may brilliant moments, most of them subtle, but it does go overboard quite a bit as well in the end with the levitating shotguns and such. As for the nun, is that done to death? I'm trying to think of more evil nuns in movies, maybe you watch more horror than I do.Quoting megladon8 (view post)
That said, I prefer part one, but I didn't see this massive drop in quality from 1 to 2.

There was like an entire sub genre of horror in the 70s nicknamed “nunsploitation”. Most of them were Italian or Spanish, but it was a thing.
Also the whole “bad nun” thing has been a sexual fetish / role play for like, ever.

I wouldn't know anything about that.Quoting megladon8 (view post)

But we're talking about movies, not cosplay or roleplay. Furthermore, the 70's are a looong time ago and I know since I'm from that time.Quoting megladon8 (view post)
Strictly speaking, I don't recall any high-profile bad nun movies in the last 2 decades so it remains an odd complaint to say it's been done to death (in the movies).

Oh I always forget about Dark Skies, too.
It’s pretty decent.
Love me a good alien flick.
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"
"Rick...it's a flamethrower."
Tried The Conjuring 2 again.
Eh.
Guess I like it better than the first viewing but not by much.
The musical cues are fucking terrible. “London Calling” to show we’re in England? “I Started a Joke” after the family is accused of faking? Really?
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"
"Rick...it's a flamethrower."
That would be a fine choice.Quoting TGM (view post)

Those were both great scenes. I also thought the demon nun was really creepy.Quoting Dead & Messed Up (view post)

I wanted to like this but there isn't enough going on here, even with the "twist" on the franchise, which I kind of enjoyed. But mostly the film relies on what Red Letter Media would describe as, quiet time, BAM!!! Quiet scene, BOOM! Quiet scene, ZING! The continuity doesn't make much sense at all. Why would the mother have more power than the demon? The only genuine spooky scene was the dark figure turned coat rack.
I guess they are making a 5th one.
