New Jack Ryan films on the way...

...and being directed by Sam Raimi!

Variety reports that Paramount has asked Sam Raimi to head up a new series of films based on the character from Tom Clancy's novels.

They'll be stories of when Ryan was younger.

From the sounds of it, Paramount got jealous of Universal's success with the Bourne movies.

    That's how I feel, too.

I was never the biggest fan of the franchise, anyways. Clancy's books are much better.

Well, at least the first two are guaranteed to have nipplige and the last one will have moments of self-aware hilarity.

You guys suck! I love the Jack Ryan movies. Hunt For Red October is still the best submarine movie.

I don't really care for Clancy's work. Yes I did enjoy two of his books but not enough to make me want to seek out more of his work. The Jack Ryan series has been getting progressively worse movie wise anyways.

God no. Then again, bringing back Baldwin and Ford isn't an option and Affleck has really impressed me with Gone Baby Gone, but The Sum of all Fears was a rather tepid affair, the worst of the Ryan movies even if I wouldn't call it flatout terrible. I think there's plenty of actors who could take the baton from Ben who, let's face it, didn't exactly make it his signature role. So how about Casey?

As for this new project, I'll go with "yawn" for the time being.

While Clancy is completing another Ryan novel, the studio hasn't read it and so hasn't decided if it will use the new book or come up with an original story. Paramount controls rights to the Ryan character, and gets first look at the new novel.
as a writer i find this fucking degrading. even if i'm not a true believer of clancy, what the hell is this bullshit "an original story"? the last time i check there are three or four ryan novels that have never been made into movie, the studio can pick any of this. granted they're literate enough to sit down and read. why on earth you want to make a non-clancy ryan movie? this totally eludes me. :frustrated:

even though i haven't read them myself, clancy did write post-cold war stuffs, didn't he? granted cardinal of the west kremlin is dated as hell (and not a good novel to begin with), i find it hard to believe any of his other novels are at that level.

    We won!

Heh I just had to quote that Adult Swim commerical where a guy walks by, and suddenly "Cold War's Over! We won!" which is accompanied by the guy jumping for joy while throwing a fist pump. Great stuff indeed.

Don't get me wrong, its a great movie. Isn't there a four version? Anyway, I've just never been able to stay awake through the whole thing.

Apparently, the fat lady is still stuck in traffic, and it's been getting colder again...

HfRO is anything but a snoozer. I laugh at its inaccuracies but it's fun.

Heh, nah all the German speak just makes me feel like I'm getting chastized as I did as a child and I nod off. Maybe.

Fair, it is a long movie that just kind of peters out at the end... although the petering is the point I suppose... but pointy peters tend to pare down pleasure.
