You don't really want the best team over the course of the regular season to win every, or even 95% of the time, do you?
No, I want the teams that performed the best during the regular season to be rewarded for their efforts. I don't necessarily want the best team to win, I just want them to have every opportunity to do so. The way to do that is by either extending the length of each postseason series or reducing the number of participants in the field. Ideally, I'd like to see both.

So what was wrong with the playoffs this year? Who deserved to be in it that weren't?

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

Robby, isn't your gripe not with the wild card, but with the divisional breakdown? I think you'd be wiser to decry the weak divisions. In an ideal world, the top four teams from each league, regardless of division, would make the postseason. Seems that's the best way to have the best teams have every opportunity to win. I can get on board with that logic, but just simply calling the wild card "terrible for baseball" misses the point of your argument. The wild card has actually been good for baseball, and allowing the best teams to make the postseason. The divisions, and the need for a division winner to qualify for the postseason, is what hurts the game.

The only way to fairly determine the best teams in each league would be to institute a balanced schedule. There's no way MLB will ever do that. They get way to much mileage out of the big rivalries to limit those match-ups to the required degree to eliminate the unbalanced schedule.

No, I like the idea of divisions. I think they help foster rivalries and they make pennant races more exciting. Six is excessive, though, and creates an imbalance. My biggest beef is with unbalanced schedules and an excess number of teams qualifying for the postseason. I understand why people like the wild card but I much prefer dynasties to parity, which makes me somewhat of an oddity in the contemporary sports world.

Also, condolences. Rough year for Tigers fans.

Yeah bummer about Sparky Anderson. He had an fairly great track record though, what with taking two different teams to World Series wins and compelling a great overall regular season record. Plus manages don't have those kind of nicknames anymore....

Joe Morgan not returning to ESPN

Now if only Fox would shit-can McCarver (and Joe Buck, while they're at it), we'd be all set.

So awesome. Hopefully Hershiser will stick around as the color commentator. I'm not sure who I'd like to see doing play-by-play. Sciambi is probably the most attuned to my sensibilities.

One can still dream of this happening, KF. But hey its a start. However, I'd rather see Joe Buck go first.

McCarver is great. I also like Jon Miller and Joe Buck. I'm fine with Morgan, but I can see why he might grate on some people.

McCarver and Morgan should both lick a running chainsaw so their tongues never work again. They are brutal. Jon Miller is only a degree better.

Joe Buck - I don't mind that much. Looks like I'm in the minority.

Gawd, this may be the most boring offseason ever.

I have known you over the internet for... five years now? I have never disagreed with anything you've said more vehemently than I do with that statement. I'm kind of stunned right now.

For what it's worth, I like Jon Miller.

Hey, Jeter won another Gold Glove. I guess he will be worth the close to $20 million a year contract he will sign this off-season. Dumb.

I think the Yankees would be thrilled with giving Jeter $20m/year as long as it was for a max of 3 years. The problems only start when he says that he wants 5-6 years.

Both good choices. You can argue Heyward over Posey, I guess, but it's really not worth the debate since they were so close.

I would have voted for Posey, really. Feliz is a great choice for the AL side.

I still have no idea who the AL MVP should be. Maybe Josh Hamilton? NL MVP should probably go to Joey Votto, although Albert Pujols and Carlos González are also worthy of receiving the award.

Cameron Maybin traded to the Marlins. Guess he was hurting the Marlins' heart too much with his huge amount of talent that never saw the light of day in the majors.

Dan Uggla was given to the Braves for some reason.

    The Marlins are a disgrace.
