I enjoyed this. It gets 2017 California culture right. I live in the Bay Area and unfortunately know a few people like this, although anyone that narcissistic is going to feel at a distance. I also like the character shifts along the way. Tasty cinematography as well.

O'Shea Jackson is really great. Kid's gonna be big soon, I think.

More people need to see this movie. It's such a timely commentary on how social media has impacted contemporary society.

I don't think the social media commentary is all that biting, actually. There's some genuinely great stuff; I particularly love the shot of Aubrey Plaza's face when the first tagging notification shows up, and of course the (albeit really predictable) ending, but mostly it just updates the technological use of the familiar stalker story, and a lot of the dysfunction shown are very much physical acts (the dog, taking pics of the bathroom, the "secret," etc). Social media almost disappears in the middle act. The whole movie also only satirizes a limited segment of the generation, and barely touches on the more universal impact of social media. I feel like there's more dissection of white girl culture here than there is of Instagram culture.
Movie Theater DiaryQuoting Donald Glover
Works better in moments than in overall arc, which wobbles at various points and peters out a bit in the third act (apart from an absolute kicker of an ending scene). As snapshots of Instagram and millennial cultures though, it's so screamingly biting, perceptive, and funny. I read that it's an accurate depiction/skewering of California culture, but oh boy it applies so well to the Thai upper-middle-class and upper-class social scenes also. Added bonus of actually fleshing out all of its main four characters with at least some degree of empathy too. 7/10

Great stuff. Easy to dig at it as "white girl" culture, but fairly sure it's "millennial culture." Aubrey Plaza is one of the best comedic actresses right now, and this is probably the best thing she's done.
Spicer also elevates it with Spring Breakers-level cinematography.
Also, saw the poster, and thought it was Ice Cube in this movie. Forgot that it was the guy who played Ice Cube.
I need to do a better job at reading these threads. I miss stuff like this
No Matchie noms for this film which is weird, because this is right up MC's alley. Loved this.
I just don't think enough saw it. It was in my top ten.Quoting Dukefrukem (view post)
