    The 15:17 to Paris (Eastwood)

Based on the real life story of how 3 American soldiers abroad thwarted a terrorist attempt on a high speed train bound for Paris.

Amazingly, the soldiers will be played by themselves rather than actors.

I remember this story. I think we talked about it in the news thread at the time.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

Now we get to play the fun game of, "Which kind of Eastwood will this be?"
"How is education supposed to make me feel smarter? Besides, every time I learn something new, it pushes some old stuff out of my brain. Remember when I took that home wine-making course and forgot how to drive?"

My guess is "the bad Eastwood." I don't think he's made a good movie since Million Dollar Baby. Except maybe Gran Torino. That one line of dialogue towards the end makes the decision to use the real guys look dubious.

Yeah, that was a bad line. I thought the crux of the real event was ordinary people standing up, rather than we were meant for something bigger.

This movie needs Tom Cruise and Jon Voight on top of the train.

Based on the acting on this trailer, this gamble probably didn't work.

I was actually just reading about Matt Damon and he’s like, ‘There’s a culture of outrage.’ I’m like, ‘Well, they have a reason to be outraged.’ I think it’s a lot of dudes just being scared. They’re like, ‘What if I did something and I didn’t realize it?’ I’m like, ‘Deal with it.’

I wonder if he did this because he regretted not casting the real Sully instead of Tom Hanks.

This looks as strained and ham-fisted as Sniper and Sully, but without the benefit of compelling performers at the center. Hopefully this is the end of Eastwood's fascination with making feature-length films about short, intense headline events.

For me it's Letters from Iwo Jima (I'm not a fan of Torino at all). I have a huge gap of not seeing his stuff between Torino and Sniper, but I don't feel like I missed much other than a more apparent downward trajectory.

Sully definitely confronted him after the movie, berating him that he absolutely did not order the ham & cheddar sandwich at the airport convenience store before the flight, and Clint could not afford to make that sort of mistake on set again.

Ah, right, I liked Letters too. My dislike for Flags overshadowed it I guess. Hereafter and Sniper are horrendous. Sully was one of the more pointless movies I’ve seen, at least outside of the stuff on the plane.

Sniper works when it's in the Middle East, but fails completely back in the US.

I keep thinking you guys are talking about the Mark Wahlberg movie and was like, pretty sure Eastwood didn't do that one.

You watched it? The reviews for it are hilarious. Apparently the terrorist incident is in the last 15 min of the movie and the rest of it is just like, watch three Americans go on a European vacation, visiting touristy places and nightclubs.

See, I really liked Flags and I thought Sniper was rather interesting. I dare say, If you cut the doco footage at the end of Sniper and tweaked the ending, it would have been a really good film. Like top ten of the year worthy. As it is, Eastwood can do a war setpiece as good as directors half his age and Bradley Cooper's acting and breakdown at the end is really well done.

There seem to be a lot of these movies that "exist" lately that feel like loose propaganda for servicemen and the conservative right.

Only the Brave is about the California fires and has nothing to do with terrorism.

It's also really damn good too.

The 15:17 to Paris guys are from Sacramento too, which is hardly "middle America." Although I learned from Lady Bird that Sacramento is the midwest of California.
