    GLOW (Season 1)

A show that opens with Scandal's "The Warrior" and closes out with Pat Benatar's "Invincible" is all right with me.

This show is quite good. Allison Brie and Marc Maron are the standouts, but it's a deep female-driven ensemble. Reminiscent of Orange is the New Black in some respects, but a lot more fun. It's got elements of the classic underdog story, but what's really interesting is how it tackles the way in which stereotypes are limiting for the individual, and yet so intoxicating for humans en masse. The show never condescends to its low-brow subject matter. On the contrary, it shows great affection for it, and actually makes professional wrestling seem kind of fun.

That's because it is, and always has been!

As a wrestling fan I very much look forward to this. Such a great story.

Realization as I was walking into work this morning thinking about this show:

The stereotypes employed by the wrestlers are projections of our dreams and nightmares, doing battle in front of our eyes. This explains why they evoke such strong emotions and why realism is less interesting in this context, as opposed to big, irrational fears and aspirations. That's what I would say the show is about and why it's so captivating.

Got a couple of eps left to go, but this show is wickedly funny. I am surprised to learn that Marc Maron apparently had to chase the role and sent in an audition tape, rather than the producers thinking of him for the role and pursuing him.

I was actually just reading about Matt Damon and he’s like, ‘There’s a culture of outrage.’ I’m like, ‘Well, they have a reason to be outraged.’ I think it’s a lot of dudes just being scared. They’re like, ‘What if I did something and I didn’t realize it?’ I’m like, ‘Deal with it.’

So I actually wasn't even planning on watching this before someone requested that I review it, but yeah, I actually ended up digging this quite a bit. A lot of fun to be had here. And here's that aforementioned review: https://cwiddop.blogspot.com/2017/07/glow.html

Love this show. I've watched it through twice now. Looking forward to seeing what they do now that they've set up the premise and introduced the characters.
