Funny that seemingly few have seen the one movie that put him on the map, incendies. It's great. Sicario rocks!

Teaser in ghastly quality at the moment, but that's to be expected.

That's the in-theaters teaser. A fuller trailer is out Sept. 9.

Has anyone read the books? I haven't, only seen the Lynch film. Seems like a mix between Wing Commander and Command & Conquer lol

I read part of the first book. It's ... an acquired taste, I think.

Might've been more interested except I'd fallen in with an oh so rough grade school crowd that was already reading PKD and Gibson and viewed "Dune" as dated & dorky

I've only seen the last three Villeneuve movies, but based off of just those, I'm looking forward to Dune... but not because I particularly liked all of them; you see, even if I don't compare it to that other Josh Brolin cartel Thriller, I don't feel he was particularly well-suited to elevate something like Sicario above its potboiler origins, as his style, while signaturely moody, still felt too detached to suit that effort (like the way one intense argument scene was inexplicably filmed entirely in a distant medium shot), resulting in a Thriller that, besides the exception of the extradition sequence, didn't offer many actual thrills (and that isn't even getting into the way that, although Sheridan's screenplay pays lip service to the tolls that dysfunctional immigration systems, ends-justify-the-means black ops, and the "War On Drugs" have taken on both sides of the border, it still ultimately devolves into a fairly generic alpha male power/revenge fantasy towards the end, while also constantly emasculating Blunt's character for good measure, just like it did to Olsen in the otherwise stronger Wind River, which makes it feel like he relies too much on stereotypical gender roles in his characterizations).

That being said, though I'm still looking forward to Dune because, as 2049 & (especially) Arrival have demonstrated, Villeneuve's style is extremely well-suited to big, bold Science-Fiction overflowing with ideas, which is exactly what this appears to be so far (I haven't read the book for myself yet, unfortunately), and he has no problem with tackling unweildy adaptations/sequels, so I have to imagine it'll be right up his wheelhouse. Yeah, his artistry is certainly "calculated" to a certain degree, but when he's so good at it, I can't help but be a fan, y'know?

I read the first book last year. Apart from how the main power works getting too lost up in its own New Age mysticism just a tad, it's really a feat of world-building. The planet Arrakis may be one of the most tangible, real, and impressive sci-fi creations of all-time, and how we slowly come to learn all about it, the sandworms, the locals Fremen, and all these traditions/beliefs/religions through the protagonist's clan is just masterful. Complicates its own "chosen one" narrative nicely by having its hero trying mightily hard to resist the path too.

Does there have to be one? People can prefer anything over something else.

That they both involve cops and take place on the Mexican border is a pretty broad category, I think

If you're comparing two objects in the same category ... yes? Otherwise the comparison is meaningless.

If you take it far enough, ridiculous:

The Muppet Movie > Apocalypse Now

I would argue the exact opposite. What makes Sicario great is its form, attributable almost entirely to Villeneuve and Deakins. The writer, Taylor Sheridan, has a knack for no-nonsense storytelling that I'm a fan of, but he doesn't weave tightly plotted and overly substantive yarns. In this respect, he is best paired with a director who understands that his screenplays are best conveyed as tonal pieces with a few tightly executed set-pieces. Villeneuve has been the most successful thus far at achieving this, and Sicario remains the best film in the small Taylor Sheridan catalogue.

I just thought that the two movies were linked in some way that I was unaware of. IE same screenwriter or some such thing.

    But while we're on it:

Fair enough, but its not so ridiculous as to be comparing a movie with muppets and a Vietnam movie. I don't think its that far of a stretch.
