It looks great visually, without question. But that trailer was cut like the ones for every blockbuster epic in the last five years. It's very plainly hiding the fact the war is over a freakin' SPICE. That said, it's also hiding what's going on tonally & thematically, so credit for that.

Also, did Twitter really need to host that premiere? It's as if their admins know Film Twitter exists and they're trying to rally the hivemind around something. Then again, trailers are now celebrated in huge spectacles for no reason. Remember 7 years ago in February when there was a block party for the F9 trailer?

Can we all agree that this would be much more appealing if it crossed over with the Jersey Shore universe?

It does look a bit...pretentious, like it's groaning under the weight of Herbert's novel. That worm looks huge, can you fashion a memorable action scène around it? But that's enough negativism.

Love Timmy, Love Zendaya. I was gonna see this regardless of the trailer quality. It looks ok- I'm a huge fan of 2049, but nothing else by Villeneuve, so if its more that than his other stuff, it'll be a hit for me.

It's going to be 2+ hours of cool visuals absolutely ATROCIOUS, sci fi gobbledygook dialogue.
Isn't that how the book is? (haven't read it) Or at least that's the idea I got from David Lynch's adaptation. I think you really have to pare this down and lean into visuals and atmosphere for it to be successful. Lynch's is sorta interesting if a bit painful to sit through. I know there was heavy studio interference, and he's disowned it, but whoever thought it would be a good idea to cram pages of exposition into that Dune really approached it wrong. Simplify the narrative, have some good setpieces, relish in the cool atmosphere, and finally don't worry about angry nerds mad that you left something out.

Think you hit the nail on the head with what they should do.

But knowing how much Villeneuve loves the book(s), I seriously doubt that will be the case.

I expect near slavish devotion to the source.

Nobody should care about the book nerds, they already hate this and they were gonna hate it no matter what.

As for the Worm - I was watching a cut of the trailer with matching scenes from this, Lynch and the 2000 miniseries, and it struck me how absolutely RIGHT it looks in comparison. Lynch's version mostly nailed the size but the mandibles were a bit goofy and gave away the puppet; in the miniseries it was much more animated but the CGI animation made it look like a scaled up critter and very generic. But the new version feels like watching a blue whale from up close: something impossibly gigantic and powerful, a force of nature more than a living thing. Those countless thin spikes in its mouth even remind me of a whale's baleen, filtering through crapton of water with barely a movement.

Which book nerds are hating this? The Dune subreddit is pretty super happy about everything so far across the board, for the most part.

Talking about the hardcore fans. I've seen some ugly reactions, but thankfully they were always the minority.

I got put down on another website's forum because of my overly negative reaction to Star Trek: Picard. I may have laid it on a bit thick (same reaction on this website, except here the reply was civilized) but I really was very dissapointed with the new Trek show.

So if I'm the fan in that scenario, what does that say about the so-called non-fans when my response is basically invalidated for being too strong?

Can't we accept all kinds of reactions? What's wrong with caring about a property and, however forcefully, expressing that? Are real fans not allowed to express their dissapointment about the nitty gritty of things? Assuming it is genuine of course and not meant to simply rile up the masses. But I think that's called trolling.

It could quite be that the way they express themselves may not be conducive to a proper and fair discussion. They will not stand for any counter-argument for instance and their, um, linguistic skills may leave a lot to be desired. Which I admit can be frustrating.

So I dunno, maybe there is a line there that is thinner than we realize. Fans care too, their opinion matters too, is valid also. If they are real fans, than I suppose they care for a reason. Some a might more zealously than others.

Which doesn't mean you should engage them or find it fun to engage them. That's your call of course. Feel free to give them a wide berth.

Here we all know each other and I assume respect each other so this tirade is not aimed at anyone here.

I see nothing wrong with your reaction to Picard.

It's when "fans" call for boycotts, threaten the lives and safety of people involved in the project (whatever form it takes), set up online petitions to have things retconned or changed when they don't like them, etc.

Yeah. I find it wild that so many are just asking for it to be put on HBO Max.
