He's a very 50/50 director for me. Sometimes brilliant, sometimes awful.
Absolutely. I think I only watched about 15 minutes of Bubble and had to call it a day.

But then comes along Contagion, one of my favorites of that year.

Spinal, do a Ocean's Marathon Thread! After watching Ocean's Eleven, it might be a little formulaic, but it's fun enough watching the actors that it's still really enjoyable.

    I think I'd go:

    Eleven - ***
    Twelve - *** 1/2
    Thirteen - **

    Barbarian - ***
    Bones and All - ***
    Tar - **

Okay, I'm fresh off a rewatch of 12. I only saw it once when it came out and didn't think it was as good as 11. NOW, I feel like...

Twelve is brilliant - jazzy, winking, deconstruction of modern heist films while mostly being about filmmaking.
...is damn straight! Wow there was so much more beneath the surface than I remember. I dare say this is a love letter to filmmaking of the 70s. I had a ball with it this time around.

    YES!

I'll have to refer to it, but I'm pretty sure it was in my favorites of the year. Fresh mix of French New Wave, Italy landscapes, acting, everything... I can totally understand how it was hated at the time, but certainly a fresh sequel.

I need to watch it again.

I'm kind of stunned. I didn't hate it the first time around, but I just didn't take notice of the 70s Euro-ness of it. Those crash zooms when they were walking out of jail one by one...fantastic. Hilarious. So damn good.

Great soundtrack too if I remember right.

Absolutely. Again, totally influenced by 70s Euro era filmmaking.

I was actually just reading about Matt Damon and he’s like, ‘There’s a culture of outrage.’ I’m like, ‘Well, they have a reason to be outraged.’ I think it’s a lot of dudes just being scared. They’re like, ‘What if I did something and I didn’t realize it?’ I’m like, ‘Deal with it.’

I think Eleven is good for what it is, but it's not really interesting. Twelve is brilliant - jazzy, winking, deconstruction of modern heist films while mostly being about filmmaking. Thirteen kind of sucks.
    I agree with this judgement.

I loved The Informant! Probably my favorite thing by Soderbergh.

The one where Julia Roberts plays Julia Roberts is the worst. Whichever one that is.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

That was 12, the best one.

Julia Roberts playing Julia Roberts is the high point of the series. An inspired jape. I've never understood those who object to it, though I suspect it could have something to do with its unique form of fourth-wall breaking violating the unspoken contract between the film-makers and the audience with regards to suspension of disbelief...

Oh, and The Informant! is Soderbergh's second best, behind the unimpeachable Out of Sightand slightly ahead of The Limey. I'm kind of mezzo-mezzo on the rest of his stuff. Most of it is solid without being inspiring, though he hasn't made any outright terrible movies.

I loved that Roberts' real life husband is also named Danny, and they used that in the film when Bruce Willis asks her, "Are you alone? Where's Danny?" It was deliberately trying to trip you up in making you think Willis knows it's not actually Roberts. It's a very mischievous film and I love it for that.

I forgot he did the Solaris remake. I haven't seen the original yet, but I really liked the remake. An impressive performance from Clooney.

HATED The Informant. But now I don't remember a thing about it. Lots of corn talk.

His Solaris is better than the original. Brilliant film.

Out of Sight is, indeed, unimpeachable. A truly remarkable film.
