    Rob Zombie's THE BLOB

ComingSoon.net as well as several other online publications are reporting that Rob Zombie's next project will be a remake of The Blob.

    He says...

"My intention is not to have a big red blobby thing -- that's the first thing I want to change. That gigantic Jello-looking thing might have been scary to audiences in the 1950s, but people would laugh now."

So, then, uh, what will The Blob be? If it's not a big blob, then...well...?
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"

    "Rick...it's a flamethrower."

The last Blob remake is awesome.

    But yeah...without a blob, why?

It had some amazingly yucky set pieces.

Maybe after that he can remake The Fly, but without any of that fly nonsense, because that would just be lame.

Obviously, the blob is going to be purple, because you, know..purple is so much scarier than red.

My guess is a big sentient heap of corpses and body parts.

I was actually just reading about Matt Damon and he’s like, ‘There’s a culture of outrage.’ I’m like, ‘Well, they have a reason to be outraged.’ I think it’s a lot of dudes just being scared. They’re like, ‘What if I did something and I didn’t realize it?’ I’m like, ‘Deal with it.’

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

Oh wow, that's a really good guess. Sounds exactly like something someone would think was a good, "badass" idea.

What is he thinking? The '88 remake re-did the blob well enough, it just makes no sense, him thinking the statement he's making is to no extent not inane.

I'd hate to break it to Zombie, but nobody was scared of the original Blob. That wasn't the point - it was intended to be harmless B-movie silliness.

"I'm gonna take Corman's Bucket of Blood and give it the gritty, rough edge it needed! Then I'm gonna take Tremors and get rid of all the jokes! Then I'm gonna have Stripe rape Gizmo! And Dr. Pretorious is gonna be a homicidal fucker with a whore sister! Who gets raped! Everyone's getting raped! Art is not safe."

Kevin Dillon's horrid mullet nearly ruins the '80s remake.

That haircut makes other mullets cry in shame.

Not to mention his whole faux-badass act being really, really terrible.

Then he might as well just make Akira.

Starring Sheri Moon Zombie as Kaneda.

Tee hee hee, interview with Rob Zombie from 2004:

Obviously you’re a big fan of Tobe Hooper’s – so I’m wondering how you feel towards The Texas Chain Saw remake…

Well I hope it finally makes Tobe Hooper some money (laughs)... I mean that would be nice. You know - I don’t wish anything bad on these people, I know myself how hard it is to make a movie, but my first reaction was just to wonder what the point of the remake is. I thought the same when they remade Psycho, and now they’re remaking Dawn of the Dead as well. I love the originals so much that I just wonder what the point of doing a remake of these great movies is, what do you hope to improve on?

Yeah, except it's not going to be a Thing. It's going to be a giant pentacle with a hatchet.

I still really like Rob Zombie.

Another case of a guy who knows how to shoot a film, has wonderful, distinct style, but he needs to accept the fact that his writing is terrible.

Although I don't think he directs actors that well either. All the movies I've seen from him have several scenes of people shouting on top of their lungs, usually trying to be funny. It's just annoying.

And stop casting your wife Rob

The Devil's Rejects is one of the best films of the decade.

The Devil's Rejects is easily his best, and works for similar reasons as Natural Born Killers. The weakness of the movie is Danny Trejo and Diamond Dallas Page who fit in with the bad things that Rob Zombie is capable of. Dumb jokes and being loud.

The Onion offered this comment for Halloween II: Rob Zombie is the greatest horror-movie director never to make a great movie.

I think it's an astute observation. He's absolutely in love with the iconography, possibility, and rhythms of horror, but he's never quite nailed it. Case in point: he's one of my favorite modern horror directors, and yet the only one of his films I can recommend is Devil's Rejects, and even that film's got serious issues.
