    MC Consensus: Iberian Rhapsody

Submit your FIVE TO TEN favorite films from Spain (or Portugal or Andorra if you know of any) and .... eventually .... I will give you a top TEN TO TWENTY. Films should have Spain, Portugal or Andorra listed as a country of origin in IMDb.

The point system is as follows

    1st Place- 10 points
    2nd Place - 8 points
    3rd Place - 7 points
    4th Place - 6 points
    5th Place - 5 points
    6th Place - 4.5 points
    7th Place - 4 points
    8th Place - 3.5 points
    9th Place - 3 points
    10th Place - 2.5 points

(Point system is weighted to give your top film a boost and to minimize the discrepancy between the films in the bottom half of your list.)

There will be no restrictions on short films. A list must have five films to be eligible. If you list more than ten films, I will assume that the top ten films are the ones you want to receive points. If you do not list your films 1-10, I will assign the points from the top on down.

If you decide to edit your ballot, please make a new post indicating the changes. I will give at least 24 hours warning before tallying votes.

If, for some reason, you would like to like to submit your ballot via private message, I will accept those as well. However, your ballot will be revealed after the final results are posted.

    You may begin now.

Bizarre that I still have seen nothing from Berlanga. I have had El Verdugo and Welcome Mr. Marshall on my to-see list forever.

EDIT: I didn't even look up Portugal. I forgot Costa! He is now added. This also reminds me that I haven't seen any of Ruiz's Portuguese films.

If I did a list, it would have three from Berlanga, including the two you mentioned. Don't forget about his little-seen gem, Placido.

Sorry, but I think this one is dubious. On Her Majesty's Secret Service is not a Swiss movie.

We've got a legit top 10. But we've also got a big ugly 4-way tie in the middle of it. Would love to get some more votes.

Well, if we're going to count Dans la ville de Sylvie (a French-Spanish co-production set in Strasbourg) as Spanish, it's not too big of a leap to include The Headless Woman as well.

I don't think either should count. The Headless Woman is most definitively not a Spanish film. Since international co-productions are so abundant, I think spoken language and setting are the paramount variables.

What then about Cet obscur objet du désir, where the characters move back and forth between Spain and France?

The only guideline is that the country is listed under IMDb's country of origin. After that, it's voter discretion.

Good point, but Buñuel's unique sensibilities make it a more Spanish film in story and feel to me.

Hey Raiders, I saw another Berlanga film -- 1956's The Calabuch Rocket, about a a nuclear physicist who chooses to "drop out" of the international spotlight by settling in (and hoping to blend in) the sleepy coastal Spanish town of Calabuch. This was Edmund Gwenn's final feature film and, as you could imagine, Gwenn (tho his Spanish is dubbed) is an utter delight, and an excellent reason to view yet another stellar Berlanga offering. It wouldn't quite have made my top ten -- but it doesn't miss by much.
