    Your Karaoke Set List

Not just songs that you've attempted. Songs that worked for your voice and lit up the room. I'm trying to build up my repertoire.

    For me ...

Black Crowes - "Hard to Handle"
Poison - "Talk Dirty to Me"
REO Speedwagon - "Keep on Loving You"
    J. Geils Band - "Centerfold"

I do a great "Hopelessly Devoted to You."

    Also, I'm a nerd.

My wife rocks the hell out of "White Rabbit." She's actually known for it wherever she karaokes. Friends and DJs request that she sings it when she goes.

I sound best in melodic soprano ballads, and I have a weakness for standards, retro pop, and show tunes. So, lots of "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Hold me Thrill me Kiss Me," "If I Loved You," etc, etc.

Are we talking about songs we just like to sing leisurely, or does MatchCut actually have this many active karaoke bar frequenters?

    I just...I don't know...I don't think I could get into that.
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"

    "Rick...it's a flamethrower."

I don't go to karaoke bars, but I sing karaoke with friends on home machines, and I also attend a surprisingly number of live music sing-a-longs with my more-talented friends on guitars and pianos. (And madolins and banjos and cellos.)

One of my more common musical groups plays mostly folk songs ("Rise Up Singing"), so I have a completely different playlist for those nights: I like "The Great Storm is Over," "I'll Fly Away" and "Morning Has Broken" especially.

I'm awful, so I go for more entertainment then trying to be good. Hence, Motorhead. I got a standing ovation.

I'm specifically curious about songs that have succeeded in a karaoke bar setting. There's an art to it. It's not about the singing as much as about finding the right song for a general group of people who are out wanting to have a good time. You're more DJ than performer. If people like the song, they'll help you out. If they don't connect with it, you're on your own. Familiarity, melodic hooks, danceability, fun sing-a-long chorus, not too much of an instrumental break, under 5 minutes ... these are the things I think work in that setting.

This probably goes without saying, but I don't "rock." It's an easy way for me to look completely ridiculous.

My girlfriend and I do make a pretty good duet for "My Eyes" from Dr.Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. When she agrees to do the female part, that is. She prefers the negativity in Horrible's lyrics.

Other than most of David Wilcox's catalog (especially "Saturday They'll all Be Back Again"), my go to songs are:

    "Kryptonite" - 3 Doors Down
"Learn to Fly" - Foo Fighters
"If You Could Read My Mind" - Gordon Lightfoot
    "Africa" - Toto
    "Smooth" - Santana/Rob Thomas

    and

"Skullcrusher Mountain" by Jonathan Coulton (which is great at an actual bar, because it catches so many people off guard).

A friend of mine is a musician, and any time he plays a show at a bar or pub, he cannot call it complete until he performs "Layin' Pipe".

There was a guy at the karaoke bar last night who brought his own harmonica. I kid you not.

Ooo, this would be fun. I'm quite certain it's out of my range though.

"Rock" is probably the wrong word there. She just sings it with such power that it usually leaves people with their jaws hanging before they erupt into applause. It gives me goosebumps.

"White Rabbit" is exactly the sort of song I can't do, because it's not melodic. There's long stretches of one note, or two notes together. Not my strength.

    Props to Val.

I'm good at joke singing because I have a really, really deep voice.

It can also go surprisingly high. I often catch people off-guard with that.

I have good range. I'm just not very good

Great choices! I tried "Creep" once. It ... uh ... didn't work out.
