The tagline for this film should be "Fuck Birdman". This is what to the best of my discerning knowledge is a honest-to-God 140 minutes long take of awesome. The pleasure of discovering this film before Internet's all consuming information well spoils it for you is what film festivals are for.

This was awesome. I like how unlike Birdman, Gravity, Russian Ark, or any of these other long take spectacles, it goes for invisibility so that you're focused more on the performances than the unbroken shot. So much so that, 30 minutes in, I started questioning why this needs to be one long take at all, but I came around to it in the end. It needs that real time seamlessness to sell the rather unbelievable premise, and it lays it all, again, on the performers. Can you sell this premise just through interactions that you see 100% of? Can you make the audience buy that two people would fall in love and have such trust in each other in just under 2.5 hours after meeting for the first time, and can you make them buy it without the help of montages or time passing or suggestive editing that even Linklater used, but just through showing people having this extended conversation? I think that's an even more impressive feat than the shot itself, although that's not to say that the cameraman doesn't deserve all the handjobs in the world.

I was actually just reading about Matt Damon and he’s like, ‘There’s a culture of outrage.’ I’m like, ‘Well, they have a reason to be outraged.’ I think it’s a lot of dudes just being scared. They’re like, ‘What if I did something and I didn’t realize it?’ I’m like, ‘Deal with it.’

That's kind of what I've understood this movie's marketing ploy to be, and I honestly think it's reductive. To be fair, I haven't seen this yet (I will tomorrow), but even so, I think Birdman is still a very good film in its own right.
