    The Upcoming Film Discussion Thread?

For projects that don't deserve their own threads just yet?

Two items about American live-action adaptations of previously Japanese (great) animated fare:

    - Jeff Stockwell (The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys, The Bridge to Terabithia) is writing an adaptation of Kiki's Delivery Service for Disney for a planned 2009 release. I liked Bridge and thought its script was pretty strong, so I'm surprisingly willing to give it a shot.

    - Leonardo DiCaprio is producing and Ruari Robinson, an Irish director who has done two shorts according to the IMDb, is set to direct a pair of Akira films. It's going to be moved from Tokyo to New York, with each film being adapted from three volumes of the six-volume manga.

Script review of a Highlander Reboot.

    apparently they want to use guns in a new movie basing this reasoning losely off something Sean Connery said;

... in the original film it is implied, though never clearly stated, that the immortals live by a certain code and that part of that code is to only use an edged weapon of choice (usually a sword) in their duels. You never see an immortal pull a shotgun or AK-47 and unload on their opponent, then calmly walk over to take their head. Yet in the remake the use of firearms is not only allowed, it is welcomed. At one point in the script while Ramirez (MacLeod's mentor, played by Sean Connery in the original) is teaching MacLeod how to fight, he tells him to always become proficient with the weapons of the time, and use whatever is necessary to gain an edge. Later we see MacLeod employ a sniper rifle in the hope of catching The Kurgan unawares and dispatching him from a safe distance. This all might be practical, but by including this element much of the charm of the original film is lost.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

I'm not a huge fan of The Highlander films or series, but part of the appeal and mystique is that they use swords. Carrying guns would make it feel like just another action franchise.

Highlander with guns. Now there's an idea that pisses the living shit off me.

    Yeah, I gotta' rewatch Jaws.

Also, when are more of Spielberg's movies going to hit Bluray? Seems kind of strange (or maybe just frustrating) that he's only got one out (if I recall correctly).

    Wendigo was so terrible.
    Nuh uh!

I'm looking forward to Harvey. It'll benefit from Spielberg's sweeping and/or kinetic sentimental camera (and imagination) to keep it from being stagey and based-on-a-play-y, the source material is interesting enough, and it'll be interesting to see if they keep the old-fashionedness intact.

Tom Hanks turns down role in Harvey.

Seems Spielberg had the same predictable idea as was mentioned here. Good on Hanks for turning down the role.

The Orphanage was great. I won't see a remake no matter who's directing it.

So, they're making a Tucker Max movie. For some reason.

I'm rereading The Odyssey for the umpteenth time and I thought that here's a book that needs to be filmed well. IMDB shows only a made for TV movie and an upcoming The Odyssey (2012) directed by George Miller with Brad Pitt involved.

I was actually just reading about Matt Damon and he’s like, ‘There’s a culture of outrage.’ I’m like, ‘Well, they have a reason to be outraged.’ I think it’s a lot of dudes just being scared. They’re like, ‘What if I did something and I didn’t realize it?’ I’m like, ‘Deal with it.’

Yeah, that's good but I'd like a Spear and Sandals rendition. I see that this 2012 version might be futuristic?!

It looks like any chance of another "Bourne" film anytime in the foreseeable future are now null and void.

I'm both saddened and a bit happy about this. I really want to see more Bourne - it was one of the greatest actioin trilogies of all time - but I also didn't want them to start fucking everything up.

I'm kind of glad they quit while they were ahead.

Considering that the third Bourne is the best of the series, I'm perfectly fine with them not making another one. However, when I saw the preview for Green Zone I almost thought it was another Bourne movie, heh.
