Ultimately a yay for the atmospheric quality and several different wordless sequences, where Amirpour trusts in stellar imagery to communicate longing and decisions.
The film's screenplay is a little bit more ephemeral than I'd like, sadly--it plays a bit like Only Lovers Left Alive-lite, where the characters are sketched rather than super-talky. It's never a good thing when the cat is more clearly sketched than the male character. I have less reservations about Amirpour using ambiguity for the girl since mystery works for her.
The Boat People - 9
The Power of the Dog - 7.5
The King of Pigs - 7
It plays like a good student short film stretched to nothingness, since there's not any actual writing done here. It's an atmosphere piece and nothing else. Cool to look at and intriguing if you only catch one or two scenes. Exhausting if you have to watch the whole thing.
Some pretty obvious homages to Jarmusch and Leone also make it seem like a film school adventure. Regardless, I'll watch this girl's next film. There's plenty of untapped potential here.
