yeah, it's not what i expected either. i was... expecting something better.

as a rapper? of course not, but jay hasn't had an album that can match any of kanye's since the black album.
i was a pretty big fan of american gangster, kingdom come and blueprint 3 were both lowpoints in jay-z's career

2011: The year the sax solo was cool again.

Midnight City's is pretty excellent, but beyond that, the fact that even the most recent Katy Perry and Lady Gaga (hers by the late Clarence Clemons) mega-singles have pretty prominent ones show that they can even work commercially too.

A step back in the right direction of actual band instruments used in hit songs?
Last 11 things I really enjoyed:

    Speed Racer (Wachowski/Wachowski, 2008)
    Safe (Haynes, 1995)
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (Parker, 1999)
    Beastie Boys Story (Jonze, 2020)
    Bad Trip (Sakurai, 2020)
    What's Up Doc? (Bogdanovich, 1972)
    Diva (Beineix, 1981)
    Delicatessen (Caro/Jeunet, 1991)
    The Hunger (Scott, 1983)
    Pineapple Express (Green, 2008)
    Chungking Express (Wong, 1994)

I'm not a fan of the sax solo. I generally don't care for horns in my rock/pop, although there are certainly exceptions. The Beatles used them well.

Yeah, when I first heard them I wasn't that into them. I liked a track or two off of the first album but it didn't grab me per se. Now I'm not sure what shifted but I can't get enough of their sound. Where in the past many of their tracks sounded like any other I now experience a more nuanced soundscape that feeds back into the totality of their work. I would say their best album is probably Classics though, you might give that a shot. They're also very good live.

Yet another reason disliking Gosling is inexplicable. Saw them play at a festival last summer and they were a ton of fun. They had about 25 kids all costumed up on stage with them singing the choruses. It was a nice surprise since I hadn't heard of them before that.

Just went through Ratatat's LP3. Not surprised you're underwhelmed. It's their weakest album.

i prefer their remix mixtapes to any of their albums

plus the remix of "we share our mother's health" they did is pretty killer
