That's cool. I just don't get that kind of hip hop.

It lacks everything I look for in hip hop: a good beat, good lyrics, good delivery, good production

I'm not tuned into that wavelength. But obviously many people are. That thing has millions of views! Wild.

Could be an age-gap thing. Maybe I'm too old to get it.
Did you listen to that Shad track I posted last page? He's good stuff. Saw him last weekend actually, quality live show as well.

Have seen the "Rose Garden" video? Awesome song and video (esp. once you get the trick).

I too prefer rap with a good beat, good lyrics, good delivery, good production and that doesn't sound like complete shit. Sucks getting old.

  10. #3485
then why are you listening to that shad song?

    *rimshot*

  11. #3486
in all seriousness, i can see the appeal but i don't like it. his def poetry jam flow is the most irksome aspect of the song to me. he barely acknowledges the beat (which i also don't like, mainly for the annoying vocal sample)

he's a talented lyricist, but that's about it

  12. #3487
and i don't think it's an age thing, because 16-17 year old me would eat that stuff up. i was way more into "conscious" hip hop back then

basically, thinking about this more, my taste has mirrored kanye's artistic evolution (to a point). he started off rapping and producing for guys like saul williams, slum village, common and dilated peoples and i used to love that stuff. but now you're more likely to see him associating with dudes like rick ross, pusha t, lil wayne and young jeezy and rapping over beats by lex luger (one of brick squad's producers) and tweeting about odd future

speaking of brick squad, now listening to:

I also find Kanye to be terrible.

And what you describe sounds much more like a devolution than an evolution to me.

First listenthrough on the Jay-Z/Kanye. It's not exactly what I expected. One thing's for sure though, Kanye has nothing on Jay-Z.

yeah, it's not what i expected either. i was... expecting something better.

as a rapper? of course not, but jay hasn't had an album that can match any of kanye's since the black album.

I think it's an album that'll grow on me, and enjoy as I'm doing housework or writing. Not exactly one for parties though which is what I was hoping for.

Yeah, probably the same for me, along with the slightly re-worked "That's My Bitch". It's sort of a shame in that way that it comes first on the album, but it's a perfect opener. I didn't even realize that was The-Dream in the middle part until I read the credits. Good stuff.

Also, "Illest Motherf**ker Alive" and "Primetime" are probably two of the strongest songs of the bunch, but they're reduced to only being on the Deluxe version, along with the very good "The Joy" (formerly a G.O.O.D. Friday release) and the less worthy "H*A*M" (the M, evidently, stands for "Meh"). I think this will be the sort of album I start to really enjoy once I make my own custom tracklist.
Last 11 things I really enjoyed:

    Speed Racer (Wachowski/Wachowski, 2008)
    Safe (Haynes, 1995)
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (Parker, 1999)
    Beastie Boys Story (Jonze, 2020)
    Bad Trip (Sakurai, 2020)
    What's Up Doc? (Bogdanovich, 1972)
    Diva (Beineix, 1981)
    Delicatessen (Caro/Jeunet, 1991)
    The Hunger (Scott, 1983)
    Pineapple Express (Green, 2008)
    Chungking Express (Wong, 1994)
