Don't know what I expected this to look like or what I thought it was generally about, but it certainly wasn't that!

(And I couldn't look forward to it any more.)
Last 11 things I really enjoyed:

    Speed Racer (Wachowski/Wachowski, 2008)
    Safe (Haynes, 1995)
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (Parker, 1999)
    Beastie Boys Story (Jonze, 2020)
    Bad Trip (Sakurai, 2020)
    What's Up Doc? (Bogdanovich, 1972)
    Diva (Beineix, 1981)
    Delicatessen (Caro/Jeunet, 1991)
    The Hunger (Scott, 1983)
    Pineapple Express (Green, 2008)
    Chungking Express (Wong, 1994)

That's a really bad trailer. Makes it look like feel good Oscar bait nonsense (although pretty looking nonsense).

This seems like another pretty looking movie but almost instantly forgettable. Just like everything Malick has done in the 2000s...

Beyond the dinosaur scene in Tree of Life, I couldn't tell you a single scene in that movie beyond people running around after each other in a whimsical stage.

I like to think of this as the Bruce Wayne on Vacation.

Looks meh but I am intrigued to see what looks like a very different type of role for Bale.

    Loved all those images.

Gave me a bit of an Eyes Wide Shut vibe-- voyage of excess becomes voyage of the self. Yuppie goes hedonist to learn about himself (but in LA!).

I remember The New World being a 74 hour documentary about photographing trees and wheat and 20 minutes of regal people in Europe. Or something.

I think Bale smiled more in that trailer than he has in the entirety of his film career.

I haven't watched the trailer, but like everyone else not drinking the kool-aid, I think Malick's been going steadily downhill since Days of Heaven. Much of The Thin Red Line is brilliant, but in the last third, the story comes to a complete standstill, and The Tree of Life is a rambling series of self-contained vignettes that could be arranged in almost any order plus a detachable (if spiffy) "origins of the universe" sequence. Apparently his method of making a movie now is to get a bunch of A-listers together, let the camera roll until it runs out of film (God help us if he goes digital), and then hire a team of editors to whip it into some sort of shape.

The Banshees of Inisherin (Martin McDonagh, 2022) mild

Dammit. We need boner to come back from his hiatus to set things straight.

Heh. Well, if you'd watched the trailer you'd know that he has already.

To the Wonder was also partially shot on the Red camera.

I was actually just reading about Matt Damon and he’s like, ‘There’s a culture of outrage.’ I’m like, ‘Well, they have a reason to be outraged.’ I think it’s a lot of dudes just being scared. They’re like, ‘What if I did something and I didn’t realize it?’ I’m like, ‘Deal with it.’

wut. The movie is very clearly structured and the vignettes are all closely related.

This looks like a significant departure for Malick: hedonism, buzzing electronic music, cheap-looking digital video, extremely distorted images. Hopefully less twirling.

At this point I have no idea what people like so much about Malick's cinema, but at least this looks like a departure from To the Wonder and the one with the dinosaurs.

I think both that -- and going by that trailer, Cups as well -- used it pretty minimally. Technical specs online list it as 35mm, 65mm and Arri Alexa, the last of which is definitely the case with those club, shower and limo bits (which makes sense practically for limited spaces), but not much else by the looks of it. [EDIT: Maybe that library scene with Portman too, considering the jaggedy frame-rate.] The rest seems deliberately low-fi, Go-Pro kind of stuff.

What's with veteran filmmakers being so addled by the film business environment that they are compelled to make Hollywood satires?

Aka everyone go watch Cronenberg's Maps to the Stars in about a month or so (or obtain it alternatively). It's much more in Croney's wheelhouse than Malick's (I've seen it, it's weird and Cronenbergy). But "Cups" does look beautiful.
The Act of Killing (Oppenheimer 13) - A
Stranger by the Lake (Giraudie 12) - B
    American Hustle (Russell 13) - C+
The Wolf of Wall Street (Scorsese 13) - C+
    Passion (De Palma 12) - B

Related in what sense? They're related temporally and thematically, but causally, not so much. It's just one damn thing after another.
