Match-Cut Band Consensus - The Beach Boys

    The Rules of the Game:

    How to post selections:

    - Assign a rating to each album based on a scale of 1-10
    - Half points may be used
    - It is not necessary to rank the albums. Instead, please post all lists in chronological order, starting with the earliest album.

For an album to be eligible for the band's overall rating, it must have at least four (4) votes. Otherwise, there isn't a sufficient amount of votes to make the rating as objective or effective as an album that has received twenty (20) votes. If an album is mentioned only once or twice, I will still post that album's average (quite easy if only mentioned once) but I will separate it from the albums that factor into the band's overall rating.

The Beach Boys Today - 6
Summer Days (and Summer Nights) - 6
    Pet Sounds - 9
Smile (2004 Brian Wilson completed version) - 10
    Smiley Smile - 8
    Wild Honey - 8
    Friends - 9
    20/20 - 9
    Sunflower - 8

Surf's Up - 10 - The Beach Boys' crowning achievement, a monumental masterpiece that contains two of the greatest songs ever written and recorded: "Disney Girls," and "Surf's Up" (Surf's Up was originally written for Smile, but this was the album that it officially appeared on before the 2004 Brian Wilson version of that lost album) Even the art work is masterful. It's an album overflowing with sad nostalgia as a group of artists examine their past while the demons of their present haunt them. One of the great modern artistic statements.

Carl and the Passions - So Tough - 8
    Holland - 8
    LA (Light Album) - 6
That's Why God Made the Radio - 5

Most people I know who are super into the Beach Boys are musicians, or are into the process of creating music. They seem to be a band that musicians are in awe of because of their immense talent in arranging and the instrumentation used in their pop songs. They're a band that we meticulously study, carefully examining every single note and passage. I could probably study Smile and Surf's Up every day for the rest of my life and still discover new things.

I was actually going to respond to your previous post with something like this commentary. While not a musician myself, I have a number of close friends who were music majors and I've always been drawn to the study of music. Brian Wilson is a genius who was able to manipulate the innate talent and bond of his brothers, leading to some of the most complex pop music ever created. Having said that, The Beach Boys' best works are also sublime and awesome- as effortlessly pleasing to the senses as they are rewarding to the intellect.

I love The Beach Boys because they craft perfect pop music. I'm not a musician though heh. Wouldn't It Be Nice is one of those songs that makes me grin everytime I hear it.

Hey, I'll come back to do this one. I have listened to parts of almost all of them, but these I know and remember (or still listen to) pretty well...

    Surfin' U.S.A. - 7.0
    Little Deuce Coupe - 5.5
    All Summer Long - 7.5
    Pet Sounds - 9.5
    Smiley Smile - 9.0
    Wild Honey - 6.0
    Surf's Up - 9.0
    Holland - 6.5
    Love You - 8.0
    Still Cruisin' - 4.0
    Smile Sessions (2011) - 10.0
That's Why God Made the Radio - 5.5

The 2004 Smile album is a Brian Wilson album in my estimation, not The Beach Boys.

I love Good Vibrations, but I've never made it past that farm animal song on Smile
I am impatient of all misery in others that is not mad. Thou should'st go mad, blacksmith; say, why dost thou not go mad? How can'st thou endure without being mad? Do the heavens yet hate thee, that thou can'st not go mad?

Never got really into them even though they've recorded some of the best songs ever: Surfs Up, God Only Knows etc. Like Melville I have trouble with the super goofy ones.

BTW I will get to the tallying. I've just started a new job, so its harder to justify using work hours to spreadsheet Brian Eno albums.

I also think the 2004 'Smile' is really more a Brian Wilson solo album.

Also, Thirdmango's ratings are killing me.

Heh heh. I'll bet. Not big at all on Eno or the beach boys. Perhaps on other bands you won't dislike it as much. Unless you love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs in which case prepare for more.

Well, shit, if it is going to make a difference like that, count my Smile rating for the 2004 Brian Wilson album.
