Star Wars: The Force Awakens (JJ Abrams) -- NO SPOILERS IN THIS THREAD!

I think it's time for this film to get its own thread while the other thread can be speculations, news, and rumors of the series as a whole.

Anyways, the teaser trailer is supposed to drop on Thanksgiving. It's only going to be in theaters, so expect shoddy cam versions galore (Morris, control yourself).

I've been uber-cynical about this project, but I dunno... I've slowly been turned around. I've been careful on what I've read, but everything sounds like JJ is going to bring the essence of the OT back in full form. I'm excited.
    Sure why not?

STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI (Rian Johnson) - 9
STRONGER (David Gordon Green) - 6
THE DISASTER ARTIST (James Franco) - 7
THE FLORIDA PROJECT (Sean Baker) - 9
LADY BIRD (Greta Gerwig) - 8

I haven't read anything about the plot either, but I'm not expecting this to be good (in typically JJ form). So what gives you such high hopes?

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

Hope the trailer gets an official online release at a later date. Only releasing it in a small number of theatres is a weird move.

I'm really curious who the new main character is.

I thought it was John Boyega but now signs seem to be pointing more towards Oscar Isaac.

    Trailer day!

Confirmed to be on iTunes at 10:15am ET / 7:15 PT in addition to the original (and still pretty cool) 30-theatre, "plays in front of everything" plan, which in this day and age, would've just resulted in an immediate scramble of everyone hunting for the best-looking phone-recorded bootlegs of it anyway.

In terms of my expectations, I think the fact that Abrams has already seemingly decided this will be his one and only Star Wars film, something that's essentially the ultimate dream-come-true project for him, already having chosen to hand things off to Rian Johnson (and whoever else from there) similar to what Lucas did after A New Hope, all kind of helps fuel the idea in my mind that he's really sincerely going to put everything he has into this.

I mean, as someone who grew up with the original trilogy and the prequels within a pretty short span of time (I saw all the Special Editions in theatres in '97 at the height of my love of the movie and then Episode I came just two years later, continuing that trilogy into my teen years), it's a weird thing to feel tangible and bankably warranted anticipation for films with this banner now decidedly past my youth. What if this rebirth doesn't just redeem the name, but actually makes it into something genuinely new and as exciting as ever?

This is the first time we've had official forward chronological momentum in this franchise in 32 years, which marks it as a new thing in my lifetime, and the possibilities are as endless as they really could be at this point. Let's just hope that doesn't an overload of pointless and banal spinoffs alternating with new Episodes every single year to the point that the Original Trilogy somehow gains even holier status to fans.
Last 11 things I really enjoyed:

    Speed Racer (Wachowski/Wachowski, 2008)
    Safe (Haynes, 1995)
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (Parker, 1999)
    Beastie Boys Story (Jonze, 2020)
    Bad Trip (Sakurai, 2020)
    What's Up Doc? (Bogdanovich, 1972)
    Diva (Beineix, 1981)
    Delicatessen (Caro/Jeunet, 1991)
    The Hunger (Scott, 1983)
    Pineapple Express (Green, 2008)
    Chungking Express (Wong, 1994)

I have what I think is a pretty brilliant idea.

The new films should each follow some retro style of filmmaking. Here are a few of my ideas:

Star Wars: Forceful Entry - a late 80s crime thriller starring Alec Baldwin and Melanie Griffith.

Star Wars: Raw Force - 80s cop actioner starring Tom Sellick.

Star Wars: You Forced My Hand (You Made Me Do It!) - 70s exploitation / revenge thriller.

Star Wars: Force of Will - silent era epic.

Considering that Fisher, Hamill, Ford and the Falcon are all back one could be forgiven for thinking that the possibilities are in fact extremely limited.

That said, of course I'm excited.

That doesn't feel anything like a Star Wars film. Not sure that's good or bad, just an observation. Too little to go by with that tiny amount of footage, other than the complete impracticality of that light saber. Also, was that Cumberbatch doing the v/o? Is he in the film? I haven't been keeping up.

Yeah that was Cumberbatch, at least for the first bit.

What's wrong with the lightsaber? That's a pretty common sword design.

Kind of love that it doesn't feel like Lucas' films.

Those two tiny blades coming out of the sides seem fairly useless other than for burning your own leg or hand off.

I have to hand it to JJ. This was a well crafted teaser and not just simple fan servicing. I'm glad that there's no Luke, Han, or Leia. It all focuses on the new kids.

Boyega is going to be a beast.
