Well, it was all CG. Just dinosaurs on the island and Kong roaring in the middle of a rainstorm. All you need is a good VFX team, which they have.

I love The Kings of Summer, but this will be a massive step up for him. Regardless, my interest is piqued.

I guess the key to getting picked as the director for a big franchise projects like this nowadays is to make an assured, high-concept but low-fi indie comedy (with at least one Parks & Rec / Community / New Girl star in your cast for extra clout!), hope it gets enough buzz for a Spielberg / big studio to notice it, and let a lightbulb go off in their heads that they won't have you pay you as much as the last person who found success helming a blockbuster like it. Peter Jackson’s Kong was around 25 feet. The ‘33 Kong ranged between 25 feet and 50 feet, I want to say he was 50-plus feet when he was on the Empire State Building. He varied in size dramatically! The ’70s Kong was somewhere between them. The thing that most interested me was, how big do you need to make [Kong], so that when someone lands on this island and doesn’t believe in the idea of myth, the idea of wonder – when we live in a world of social and civil unrest, and everything is crumbling around us, and technology and facts are taking over – how big does this creature need to be, so that when you stand on the ground and you look up at it, the only thing that can go through your mind is: ‘That’s a god.’”

Translation: We gotta beef him up big enough so that Gareth Edwards' 350-feet tall Godzilla can't just step on him in the crossover movie.
