This Side of Paradise - F. Scott Fitzgerald
Best news of the year so far, even if it's slightly disappointing this will begin production sooner than Iron Man 4.
I mean, I wasn't expecting this at all since I was under the impression Black had been developing a noir called "The Nice Guys" as recently as two weeks ago and has wanted to do a big Doc Savage movie for a long time (with most assuming it would be his post-Iron Man 3 cart blanche pet project), but if it's something him and Dekker(!) really feel passionate about in some way, then I'm absolutely interested. Could this have been something they concocted around the time of the original and their Monster Squad that the studio never wanted to get off the ground that they now see the value in?
It's kind of crazy that two out of the five Predator movies made have been of the "Alien Vs." variety (and somehow the first, PG-13 W.S. Anderson one of those was actually better). I really did enjoy Antal/Rodriguez's Predators, and never saw Predator 2, but the original really is just so fun with a huge mythology in the shadows of it that still seems like it hasn't been properly tapped into, and there's nothing I'd like to see more than something in that lively spirit, and Black and Dekker (oh god, fight the power tool puns) could definitely be the guys to accomplish that.
Last 11 things I really enjoyed:
Speed Racer (Wachowski/Wachowski, 2008)
Safe (Haynes, 1995)
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (Parker, 1999)
Beastie Boys Story (Jonze, 2020)
Bad Trip (Sakurai, 2020)
What's Up Doc? (Bogdanovich, 1972)
Diva (Beineix, 1981)
Delicatessen (Caro/Jeunet, 1991)
The Hunger (Scott, 1983)
Pineapple Express (Green, 2008)
Chungking Express (Wong, 1994)
Likewise.Quoting Henry Gale (view post)
I'd love to see a sequel to that.

How do you figure?Quoting Henry Gale (view post)
One of the problems I've had with this franchise (and Aliens, for that matter) is that the mythology is actually pretty shallow and makes little sense once you think about it.
The original is fun, but it's essentially a quasi sci-fi slasher film that takes places during the day. It's interesting that Black is involved in the reboot, but I can't imagine what could be possibly be said about this universe that hasn't been said before.
I really liked Predators. However I'm excited about this reboot. Dekker and Black have a pretty good track record.

Well, more as the helmer of Night of the Creeps and The Monster Squad who's always seemed to have less to his resume than he deserved.Quoting Morris Schæffer (view post)
That's kinda what I mean though, there's a perfectly vague simplicity to its monster in the original that never really needed to be expanded on, but still leaves enough room and intrigue for there to be alternative, even endlessly contradictory possibilities to exploring whatever world the Predator(s) came from to consistently keep the mythos unexpected and interesting from movie to movie.Quoting Irish (view post)
I'd almost rather have there be no canon and every movie work on its own terms, with the creature being something of a high-tech, looming, and volatile Rorshach blot each time in different sorts of stories. That's kind of the approach the Antal movie took, isolating its characters in a very particular sci-fi fable of a hopeless snowglobe with them as the omnipresent foe, and will now end up being its own really cool little standalone take on the title characters.
No idea what'll be done with this new one, but the more different it is, the better it can only be in my eyes.

Hm. That's interesting. So are you saying the series is still interesting because they've never explained anything and, essentially, the field is wide open? That it's good they can take it in any direction?Quoting Henry Gale (view post)
On one hand, I agree with you. On the other -- I'm not sure Black is the right guy for that (it sounds like a job for Ron Moore). It's also challenging because the franchise has more or less been one thing for ~30 years. Changing it up now -- moving away from its "monster movie" origins -- might confuse fans. If that's what you mean -- but still, interesting.
The Alien franchise mythology was way deeper even before Prometheus. People just forget what the facehugger parasite does to different organisms.Quoting Irish (view post)
Shane Black's reputation as a great writer is one of the mysteries of the movie world for me. I do enjoy some of the films he wrote, but still.
Sequel now, not reboot.

Small thought: I wonder if Fox (??) will pull back on this because of The Nice Guy's failure. Probably not.
Not anymore. Boyd Holbrook steps in though and the title is now....Ollie. I have no idea what certain folks were smoking. May be just a working title, but what's the point?Quoting Dukefrukem (view post)

Gotta be just working title.
There's like zero chance they're going to release a Predator movie with the name Ollie. I don't think it's even a working title. Maybe it's just the name they're using for shooting.
