Awesome news. He's more than proven that he's capable of the immense scale of a "big" movie.

Really looking forward to more news on this one.

Though also a little disappointed that this almost definitely means he won't be doing Godzilla 2.
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"

    "Rick...it's a flamethrower."

I have a feeling the Avatar sequels won't come close to grossing the money the first movie did. Just a prediction.
Nah, they'll be as successful, or more.

Cameron is the poor man's George Lucas (or is that the other way around?). He doesn't care about characters or story, but he always delivers on spectacle. Term 2, True Lies, Titanic, Avatar, etc. Each of them have severe problems at the character or story level. But good God, the action. They're all memorable and worth seeing for that alone.

Spectacle sells a lot of movie tickets.

Yeh you're right. I was reading the comments in the link above and the one below struck me as most likely to occur.

    Quote Quoting somedudeontheinternet
The problem is that the 'lightning won't strike twice' argument was made when the first Avatar film came out. The comment referred to Cameron somehow pulling out of what everybody was pegging as a financial nosedive and somehow achieving the highest grossing film of all time... again.

And the marketing manipulation is something that makes no sense. This film lived by word of mouth. And it was a technological breakthrough. It ushered in the SimulCam and the PerfCap systems (now widely used in place of normal MoCap).

A film doesn't make 1.4billion more than the second-highest grossing film (The Avengers) based on marketing. It was all word of mouth. It's not some 3D gimmick pull either. That doesn't explain the 2D bluray being the highest selling blu of all time.

I mean, every market ate the film up. China fucking exploded all over Avatar and has since emerged as a MUCH bigger market since 2009. The potential for international box office is only more now.

But at the end of the day, it's not Cameron's name that sells these things. It's Cameron's understanding of how to tell a story that appeals to mass audiences. That's what keeps them coming back.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

I love Legendary's big congratulations poster to Edwards for getting the Star Wars gig.

Why can't there be more of that in the biz, and less petty b.s.?

According to Legendary he still will be doing the sequel and there was always going to be a film in between.

    Rumoured plot.

We’ve heard the 2016 Star Wars spin-off movie is about the group of people out to pull off the ultimate heist in a galaxy far, far away.

What the group is trying to steal is one of the most important linchpins in Star Wars history — they are out to steal the plans for the first Death Star.

As rumor has it, the story follows a group of bounty hunters who were hired for the job — think the Seven Samurai or Suicide Squad meets Ocean’s Eleven in the world of Star Wars.

Another piece of the rumor we heard is the main character of this film would be introduced in The Force Awakens.

Why would that be valuable? Don't you want the modified plans for the death star that has the random but coincidentally super critical open vent shaft covered?

I was actually just reading about Matt Damon and he’s like, ‘There’s a culture of outrage.’ I’m like, ‘Well, they have a reason to be outraged.’ I think it’s a lot of dudes just being scared. They’re like, ‘What if I did something and I didn’t realize it?’ I’m like, ‘Deal with it.’

Yeah, if they can get that whole group together, I'll be a nerd all over again.

I read that Tales book, and even played the SWCCG game to own all their cards. Turned out they were some of the worst characters to have in the game though.

Rogue was Wedge's callsign. Rumoured plot is the theft of the plans of the Death star, so a heist movie of sorts.

It's interesting to note that nearly all of Cameron's movies are highly formulaic in terms of plot structure and genre.

The Terminator is a slasher flick. Aliens is another horror film. Terminator 2: Judgment Day is an R-rated E.T.. True Lies is an action rom-com. Titanic is Jane Austen lite. And plenty has been made about Avatar being Dances with Wolves in space.

Curiously, Cameron's least formulaic (and most sincere) film is The Abyss; curious because it's the only one that was a financial disappointment.

Frankly, I think that's more an indictment of audiences than of Cameron, who is able to do what most mainstream filmmakers pray to be able to do.

Everyone's nervous as fuck. The last thing Disney wants to do is to drop the ball on the Star Wars franchise.
