I didn't know Tadanobu Asano was in this so that was a nice surprise.

I can see where a good movie might be hiding in here. The production of the whole thing is impressive. Great costumes, massive sets, location shooting, and Rinsch even shoots in 3D and actually does a decent job of it (it helps that he shoots a lot of wide and deep focus stuff, so there's actually something to look at).

But the studio interference is apparent. The ending is a whiff because of the focus on Keanu Reeves. Hiroyuki Sanada feels like the heart of the film but he keeps getting sidelined during important moments. The second half also drags a bit anyways because it gets Hollywood epic cliché with the big action setpieces and eventually I just wanted it to be over. Lots of bad editing in the second half, too, as the film hurries clumsily over some important plot developments (the whole affair with the ambush and then the convenience of everybody thinking the ronin are dead, so dumb, and a bad action scene to boot).

    A big ol' meh.

This was not as bad as I expected. I place it firmly along the likes of John Carter, G.I. Joes, and Green Lanterns...lots of excellent special effects, but lacking in story and acting quality. Can't give it a thumbs up with such obvious issues, but I was entertained.
