"Rick...it's a flamethrower."
Well, of course they did. There are few things you can be sure of, and they are death, taxes, and the gamer sites verbally fellating the latest GTA release.Quoting megladon8 (view post)

Man, I'm stoked to play this.
First 10/10 IGN has given in over decade, too.
I'm not checking the video review, but my anticipation has reached fever pitch.

I guess I never played enough fighting games to know "Mortal Kombat" was mediocre.
I always thought it was pretty sweet.
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"
"Rick...it's a flamethrower."
The only reason I even played Mortal Kombat was to see what the fatalities looked like. Half the time I couldn't even get them to happen.
Street Fighter all the way.
It's always been a terribly simplistic game, and that was the point. The first one, especially, you can take out half of someone's life with a single generic uppercut. Seriously, I just crouch until an opponent comes near and BAM, I'm already halfway to a victory. The fighting was also much slower compared to Street Fighter and other fighting games. Mortal Kombat's franchise was built on fatalities.Quoting megladon8 (view post)

A great tidbit about Mortal Kombat and its designer, Ed Boon:
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance allowed you to block throws. Somebody had to explain to Boon that it defeated the purpose of throws in fighters.
He's the laughing stock of fighting game designers for a reason.
Giving up in 2020. Who cares.

Street Fighter is a much more nuanced and strategic fighter than MK. MK is like a Z-grade horror film; it's charm is in how gory and bad it is.
I never got into MK because I hate that 2D digitized art - it always reminded me of Pit Fighter, ugh...*shutters*
There was always a strange cultural divide in the arcades surrounding these two games.
You could almost always tell who was there for what game based on the band shirt and hair cut.
ICP, Megadeath, Metallica, and other metal shirts, with long, greasy hair, denoted a MK fan.
The Smiths, New Order, and Depeche Mode shirts, with short often dyed hair denoted a Street Fighter fan.
At the MK machines, people would be smoking tobacco cigarettes, and the SF machines, people would be smoking clove cigarettes.
There were the last great days of the arcade - the early 1990s - and man were they fun.
I have fond memories of Spun_Lepton and myself spending hours at what we called the Gospelcade (an arcade in the armpit of town with the meanest old lady you ever met running the place, and oddly enough, tons of religious brochers) playing MK2. I was always Kung Lao, and almost always got my ass kicked. But oh, those were some fun times.
Losing is like fertilizer: it stinks for a while, then you get used to it. (Tony, Hibbing)
LOL, that's being kind. Street Fighter, like all other fighter games, allows you to pick a character that suits your gameplay style and try out different methods of combat.Quoting Daniel Davis (view post)
MK is one of the few games where you don't even have this, since every single character has the exact same set of moves as everybody else. You only play with different characters because they each have different fatalities.

Wow, that's weird - I was never, ever a fan of "Street Fighter" at all.
Fighting games never really tickled my fancy, because I sucked at them.
Well, that's not fully true - I enjoy them, but when I suck at them, I hate them
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"
"Rick...it's a flamethrower."
I probably spend thousands of dollars on SF at the arcades - no joke. So much money and time...Quoting megladon8 (view post)
Really?Quoting number8 (view post)
I didn't even know this.
I did like that one MK game that was more like an adventure/brawler. It was a fun rental.
Actually, the real fighter game was the first X-Men game. Basically Street Fighter, but tons more fun because it was X-Men. Cyclops FTW.
A fighting game I really did love was "Marvel Super Heroes" for the PS. Also the "Marvel vs. Capcom" games were fun.
They had the complexity of "Street Fighter", with the coolness of Marvel.
An all-time fave, though, is "Dark Stalkers". I wish I could track down a copy.
I just never liked the "Street Fighter" universe, and found the characters quite bland.
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"
"Rick...it's a flamethrower."
Yeah. I remember some pretty awesome combo moves from Mortal Kombat III so I wouldn't say that the games are all about fatalities.Quoting megladon8 (view post)
EDIT: And I will add that as far as Streetfighter was concerned, the first game for the SNES was as mindblowing a game as I've ever played, and no SF sequel released after that made my jaw drop quite as much.

Gosh dang that looks awesome.
I have it pre-ordered from 4 different places, just to be safe :P

I don't think I've ever preordered a game.
Every time I go to a store, they always have plenty of copies available.
Sure why not?
