Well said, except I think my sigh is slightly more negative than yours.Quoting TGM (view post)
This movie tries way too hard. It panders, it hits all the cliches note for note, and is blessed with one of the more cringeworthy screenplays I've ever witnessed in my life.
Winfrey and Whitaker were very good in this, but they had very little to work with.

Scenes outside the White House >>> Scenes inside the White House
It tries to tell too many stories and there's no subtlety here, of course, but Oprah is a hoot, some scenes work like aces due to their powerful messiness, and the contrivances are more humorous than offensive. It's not a 'good' film per se, but it has effective moments. With the exception of its time-sensitive finale, it mostly feels like a Hollywood movie made in the 90s.
I'm writing for Slant Magazine now, so check out my list of reviews.
Hopefully I'll have the energy to update my signature soon.
Forrest Gump but messy. Oprah and Whitaker are flawless. I couldn't stand looking at this movie sometimes thought.
How Lee Daniels continues to make movies is simply amazing to me.
