I watched about 20 minutes of Fury the other day, and the action was clean, the motivations were fairly well-defined, and the aesthetic didn't make me want to pull out my eyballs and throw them at the TV. Not sure how you get from that to Suicide Squad. Did the curse that was placed upon Shyamalan pass to him like a baton of evil?

I love how the Whedon scandals have turned peoples’ opinions on his work.

People who adored him before now act like his work is and always has been garbage.

Yeah, Ultron is really where his descent begins, and then Justice League... Hoo-boy, that butcher job sure as shit doesn't help his cause either. There's an extreme example of a movie that's precisely the sort of bad that it pretty much instantly kills any interest I may have ever had in any future projects of his.

Not just Fury, but End of Watch was also pretty damn solid for the most part, and I also recall liking Sabotage decently enough as well. Dunno about Bright, still haven't seen it (still no real desire to do so, either). But either way, pre-Suicide Squad, his output really wasn't all that bad, so I dunno what the hell went so wrong with that movie.

Fury was the "best" thing he ever got credit for directing.

I'm not trying to just be a hater but holy shit has that guy got chances and turned in utter dumpster fires that would end other people's careers. The DTV movie with Keanu, okay. But the excrement film with Bale, and the absolute shit pile flick with Arnie that I couldn't survive 30 minutes of.....damn does this dude have some something on some Hollywood folk.

My understanding is that Hollywood is so short on good directors that they'll often happily settle for "functional" directors, i.e. directors who have proven that they can actually make a film and bring it in on time and relatively on budget. I can understand that, since the pressure is huge. And that has to be part of the reason, otherwise, like you say, why are people giving him second chances?

[Although Suicide Squad was a surprise smash hit, so that's probably part of it.]

I thought Suicide Squad underperformed compared to expectations?

Underperformed for a mega comic team up movie, but still profitable enough to immediately green light a sequel (apparently).

Did it? I was under the impression that it did better than expected and pretty much surprised everyone at the box office.

It almost grossed the same domestic as Batman vs Superman. It absolutely over-performed. Even if it stared Will Smith.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

Yep. Its hold from week to week was excellent.

It seems like they managed to take a few kernels from the film and create trailers and a marketing campaign that connected with its target demographic. Besides the stuff that was obviously added and re-cut by the studio/trailer house, the tone of the actual film bore little resemblance to the film's marketing.

Considering the resources and talent that were available to the project, Suicide Squad is arguably the most incompetently made movie of all time. Just showing up on set and doing nothing would've netted a better movie. That said, Ayer didn't raise a stink when the cut was taken away from him, so perhaps he's built a reputation as a good "foot soldier."

I liked Sabotage. Didn't care for Fury.

What was the Whedon scandal? A bitter public letter from his ex-wife? Come on.

I don’t understand how 20+ years of good stuff then 2 bad movies is a descent into garbage he can never come back from.

Maybe in TV. As a movie director, he's maybe 1 for 4.

I didn't say he can't still produce something good, just that even if he does, I still just don't even care anymore. See also: Star Wars and the MCU, which I've also lost all interest in anything further from.

I am so not into this cinematic universe’s portrayal of Aquaman.

    Should be called Aqua Bro.

Instead of Arthur he should be Chad or Biff or something.
