    The DC/WB Superhero Movies Thread

    Interesting rumor.

Seems like Snyder doesn't want to have to redo a Batman origin again and is looking for an older guy to play him. Not Dark Knight Returns old, but like in his 40s, and make it seem like Batman's the veteran hero who's been operating for over a decade before Superman comes along.

I was actually just reading about Matt Damon and he’s like, ‘There’s a culture of outrage.’ I’m like, ‘Well, they have a reason to be outraged.’ I think it’s a lot of dudes just being scared. They’re like, ‘What if I did something and I didn’t realize it?’ I’m like, ‘Deal with it.’

    Jon Hamm, your phone's a'dingling!

But this is exactly the approach I'd hope they'd take with bringing in a new Batman so fast. Have him already be an accepted mainstay in this universe, tell it from Clark's perspective, have Bruce be a bit grizzled and jaded, almost looking at Superman as an unwanted, adversarial force for Gotham after that happened to Metropolis in Snyder's first film. Completely subvert audiences view of Batman on a dime. They're already going to be wary that it's all of a sudden not Christian Bale, why try to win them over the same way Nolan did?

It sounds like a really cool idea. Have the older Batman/Bruce Wayne come around and shun Superman for destroying Metropolis. I like that a lot...on paper. Fairly certain they'll fuck this up.

Great idea, but the names they're throwing around for the role are totally unimpressive thus far. Of course it's totally just rumor mill at this point.

And yeah, with Goyer writing, I have no doubt it'll be balls anyways.

How does Goyer keep writing every big WB superhero tentpole movie? Does he have a contract with them?
    Sure why not?

STRONGER (David Gordon Green) - 6
THE DISASTER ARTIST (James Franco) - 7

    What about it?

It was a huge success. He wrote it. Led to two sequels, each more successful than the last, and each he had a hand in writing.

WB doesn't seem to get, though, that he is not the golden part of the Nolan/Goyer equation.

But it's not like it's the same guy writing all the Marvel films...

He has to be in bed with WB's daughter or something. I doubt people go to see these movies because he's writing it.

Well people like Zak Penn and Simon Kinberg have had their names on tons of Marvel movies for years now. Writers build relationships with studios whether we see final films (or official writing credits) from them all the time, and the more knowledge they might have of a particular brand, the more likely they'll be offered or consulted about something new at some point (even to do uncredited rewrites, script doctoring). It just makes sense from a business standpoint to keep people in the fold instead of constantly cycling through new talent while severing ties with others.

Marvel Studios has so many movies in production at any given time, they almost have no choice but to not micromanage and just trust that every new directing/writing team they bring in can deliver (and they've lucked out pretty damn well so far). DC only seems to be really focusing on one movie at a time, for better or worse, and they've decided the best bets of ingredients that work for them begin and end with Nolan, Snyder, and David S. Goyer.

It also helps that Goyer also has his name on all three of Nolan's Batman films and is the sole credit on the first Man Of Steel. Even though I'm not a huge fan of him, I'm not sure why it would make any sense for anyone to wipe the slate clean by giving the boot to a writer that's been a part of a combined $3 Billion+ of the exact properties once again at hand here.

Sure, he also helped write Ghost Rider 2, Jumper and The Unborn in that same time frame, but it's not like anyone remembers those enough to hold them against him.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

    It's true.

I still need to see this one.

The first was just so dreadful, I think its memory has kept me away despite the directorial team.

I lament that visual ingenuity and narrative depth have become things that people don't care about anymore.

Can't deny skepticism over the idea that Ghost Rider 2 has more narrative depth than, say, Nolan's trilogy.

But still, I am eager to see it sometime.

Ghost Rider 2 is terse. Pithy next to Nolan's verboseness. Of course by virtue of length Nolan's films are gonna dig up more dirt. But Ghost Rider is about something as much as Begins is and certainly makes more sense than Rises. It's tight, has creative setpieces, yes - a Cage dialed to 11, and an economic sensibility that's way more attractive than the mounted presentations of all the other Marvel films.

It's also goofy, which I guess some people call stupid...

Spirit of Vengeance is somewhat better than the Mark Steven Johnson one, and I kind of agree with Sven that it does contain some visual ingenuity to it (though a lot of those moments were disappointingly heavily showcased and spoiled as big trailer moments that take the title character's abilities to its absolute extremes), but the movie really doesn't have much else to it. It has so many bizarre effects ideas and metaphysically enhanced montages and possession sequences, but they just randomly pop up in an otherwise bland, oddly cheap-looking religious cult thriller of sorts. It's an absolutely turgid script with no coherence to it, and even Neveldine/Taylor (who I do kinda love) don't know how to make any of it feel interesting or even superficially exciting.

And I never thought I'd ever want tell Cage to tone it down, as he's definitely going all out in it, but so much really doesn't have any good or organic purpose to it. It's like someone yelling and screaming in a wallpaper store. Sure, he's possessed, but the movie tries to find ways of him being stuck in a halfway possession where Cage can turn on the crazy, because it seemingly realized the inherent problem of the Ghost Rider character on screen is that it completely obscures the actor's abilities once he turns.

I'm surprised I remember this much about the movie, to be honest.
