    The DC/WB Superhero Movies Thread

    Interesting rumor.

Seems like Snyder doesn't want to have to redo a Batman origin again and is looking for an older guy to play him. Not Dark Knight Returns old, but like in his 40s, and make it seem like Batman's the veteran hero who's been operating for over a decade before Superman comes along.

    Jon Hamm, your phone's a'dingling!

But this is exactly the approach I'd hope they'd take with bringing in a new Batman so fast. Have him already be an accepted mainstay in this universe, tell it from Clark's perspective, have Bruce be a bit grizzled and jaded, almost looking at Superman as an unwanted, adversarial force for Gotham after that happened to Metropolis in Snyder's first film. Completely subvert audiences view of Batman on a dime. They're already going to be wary that it's all of a sudden not Christian Bale, why try to win them over the same way Nolan did?
Last 11 things I really enjoyed:

    Safe (Haynes, 1995)
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (Parker, 1999)
    Beastie Boys Story (Jonze, 2020)
    Bad Trip (Sakurai, 2020)
    What's Up Doc? (Bogdanovich, 1972)
    Diva (Beineix, 1981)
    Delicatessen (Caro/Jeunet, 1991)
    The Hunger (Scott, 1983)
    Pineapple Express (Green, 2008)
    Chungking Express (Wong, 1994)

It sounds like a really cool idea. Have the older Batman/Bruce Wayne come around and shun Superman for destroying Metropolis. I like that a lot...on paper. Fairly certain they'll fuck this up.

Great idea, but the names they're throwing around for the role are totally unimpressive thus far. Of course it's totally just rumor mill at this point.

And yeah, with Goyer writing, I have no doubt it'll be balls anyways.

How does Goyer keep writing every big WB superhero tentpole movie? Does he have a contract with them?
    Sure why not?

STRONGER (David Gordon Green) - 6

You know, it didn't even occur to me at first, but... Maybe this doesn't necessarily mean that Batman will be much more older and experienced than Superman. Maybe the sequel would just jump several years ahead into Superman's career, and this is just two experienced heroes meeting for the first time. Or maybe even not for the first time. There's a lot of ways they can take this premise.

Ghost Rider 2 has Neveldine and Taylor from Crank directing Nicolas Cage.

That sounds like a better combination than Goyer writing this.

I do not want Ryan Gosling as Batman.

Josh Brolin would be great, except for his enormous head. I think he'd look like a bobble-head in the cowl.

I'm honestly not against it at all, I was just caught off guard. (And really pipe dreaming for Michael Keaton!!)

It simultaneously feels so out of left field, and so darn obvious.

I don't like it, but hell, who else could it be? I'd say out of the big names the only one who looks like a good Batman to me is Michael Fassbender but it might be overexposure if he's also Magneto.

    So go for it.

I'm worried more about the actual pairing and director than whoever was going to be cast as bats.

It's a reasonable assumption if it is truly going to be a Superman movie that features Batman, but I'm pretty sure that at this point they're no longer going to treat it as Man of Steel 2 and in fact going to be Superman vs Batman.

Actually, I wonder how Cavill feels about all this. There's no question that he's going to be completely overshadowed on both the marketing and the press tours.

Cranston has been cast as Luthor, apparently. Official announcement to come after Breaking Bad ends.

So I'm reading "Birthright" now, and they treat Luthor like he was a childhood friend of Clark's. I'm now assuming them being about the same age is a recent development in Superman canon?

Not at all. Jerry Siegel came up with that for the original Superboy comics. His origin story was that they were friends in Smallville, and Luthor was creating a Kryptonite antidote for Superboy when he accidentally started a fire. Superboy showed up and used his superbreath to extinguish the fire, but it blew spilled chemicals all over the place, destroying the lab and hitting Luthor's head, the chemicals making him permanently bald. Luthor believed Superboy did it on purpose, and hated him since, all the way to their rivalry in Metropolis as adults.

When Byrne rebooted everything post-crisis with Man of Steel, he erased all that and made Luthor a much older self-made mogul from Metropolis, and that's how it was then.

That is until the Smallville TV show adapted the original story and popularized the notion of Clark and Lex being childhood friends. Then Waid did Birthright not long after the show debuted to set a new origin story, and he decided to go with the original story, too, since now most people know it that way from the TV show. Geoff Johns did the same when he redid the origin story again a few years later in Superman: Secret Origin. It's the one that's stuck now.

In short: the 90s were the only time in which they weren't childhood friends.

Great casting for Cranston still. I hope they give him some good material, I've honestly not liked anything they've done with Luthor in the movies.

    Thanks, man! Very informative.

Also, "Birthright" is really flippin' good.

I'm fine with either version of Luthor, really. The only one I never liked was the real estate obsessed get-rich-quick crook. That portrayal has always seemed so beneath him.

I've personally always preferred the idea of Luthor being a middle aged grizzly businessman with no personal connection to Clark.

That's just me, though. I still adored "Birthright".

I was really hoping that we, as a culture, had moved past the era of hating on Affleck. The reaction has been discouraging.
