After watching the video for Meg Myers' Running Up That Hill, I've had an idea engrained in my head that I just get let go of.

How awesome would it be to have a fully rotoscoped comic book superhero movie?

Have real people coloured and inked to look like pages of comic books brought to life.

    Me want.

Really bizarre video of Miller. Is this real?

    From Variety:

Despite confusion online over whether the video was a joke — with memes already emerging on Twitter, where Miller’s name has been trending — a source at the establishment, Prikið Kaffihús, has confirmed to Variety that this was a serious altercation at the bar, and that the man, whom they identify as Miller, was escorted off the premises.

    That's actually a great idea.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

So I guess Synder has screened his Justice League cut to WB and DC executives.... this really might become a reality if WB spends money on the finished effects.

Rumors have it they will use this as a HBO Max exclusive

Would that mean no physical media release at all?

I mean, it's way too soon to tell but even Stranger Things has a Blu-Ray release.

I hope they're kidding because actually doing this will only encourage the worst tendencies of one of the worst fandoms on the internet.

I understand the concern, but isnt there a chance this could encourage execs to back off in first place and let artists have their vision instead of filmmaking-by-committee? I know this film had a lot of (wtf is the plural of astrix), but there are plenty of other examples of films (and way too many from WB for this DC fan).

Not if they can sell the movie twice --- once in theaters then again on streaming with a "director's cut." They won't drop a beautiful double dip if they can help it.

Besides, I can't imagine any of these media monoliths giving anybody final cut when the budgets get so high. Past $100MM, forget it.

The part that annoys me: I can ignore the double dipping but after awhile the "director's cut" becomes the cut, with the original theatrical available only in weird, random "special edition" DVD box sets.

Eg: "Blade Runner," "Aliens," "Alien 3," etc.

Flash forward enough years and you get people talking about Ripley's kid like she's canon, or not realizing how much of Deckard's character was written into that terrible voiceover...

    :/

I guess that depends on what you think is the worst version, but for me, the theatrical version is the film. Director's cuts are generally bullshit.

That seems to be toeing the company line a little more than I pegged Irish for lol

A curious case is the director's cut of Alien which was done purely for commercial reasons (they wanted to have a new cut for the Alien Quadrilogy DVD set) and Scott actually admitted he prefers the theatrical cut. It's almost the same movie, too. But now it's THE cut like Irish says.

I thought Scott preferred the directors cut of alien which is actually shorter than theatrical?

No worries. I'm just spouting off.

I think you gotta draw the line somewhere, and with films or books or comics or whatever, it's the first print. That's the work they put out, that's the work we should consider. It wasn't like a first draft they asked people to pay money for.

Otherwise, these fuckers just keep messing with the material and reselling it, which weakens the work's integrity.

Eg: "Blade Runner" is much worse off for the multiple changes that Scott made to it over the years. Ditto the ridiculous alterations to "Alien" which change the film's pacing and retcon in ideas from "Aliens."

I don't like Fincher much but to his credit, he refused to be apart of that "Alien" box set sale and they cobbled together an "assembly cut" for "Alien 3."

The changes to Alien always seemed so minute to me they were inconsequential. Blade Runner I feel Scott has been wide open about hating the VO and wanting more other stuff, but the production so troubled I can understand the interference. Aliens DC is the cut for me. It's the Cameron cut that the studio was just like "ehhh. Make shorter because more show sell tickets!" Ditto The Abyss.

I think that's just because he didn't want to talk to the producers anymore but it shows integrity anyway. The Assembly Cut is better than the theatrical in every way, though.

    Scott on his Director's Cut:

I cut those scenes out for a reason back in 1979. However, in the interest of giving the fans a new experience with Alien, I figured there had to be an appropriate middle ground. I chose to go in and recut that proposed long version into a more streamlined and polished alternate version of the film. For marketing purposes, this version is being called "The Director's Cut"
    Basically a farce hahah

    Agreed on alien3 assembly.

I honestly have no feelings on any cut of original Alien lol

"Aliens" is so action based and plot heavy and the DC adds scenes that stop the narrative dead. Ripley's daughter is sorta thematically interesting (but also unnecessary). Newt's family has pretty much nothing to do with the rest of the film.

"Alien" just bugged me because the DC destroys the film's timing. That first hour is all about establishing and maintaining a mood so why would anyone wanna fuck with it?

I saw "Alien 3" in theaters and the "assembly cut" multiple times over the past ~5 years ... now I just wanna see the original again so I can compare the two.
