How tragic. Not a favorite director but liked having him around. True Romance and the Last Boy Scout are my favorites of his and I had fun with Deja Vu and his Beat the Devil short. Rest in peace.

Wasn't depression, it seems. He had just been diagnosed with inoperable terminal brain cancer.

I was actually just reading about Matt Damon and he’s like, ‘There’s a culture of outrage.’ I’m like, ‘Well, they have a reason to be outraged.’ I think it’s a lot of dudes just being scared. They’re like, ‘What if I did something and I didn’t realize it?’ I’m like, ‘Deal with it.’

My good friend blew his head off when he was diagnosed with brain cancer.

Bummer too, since most insurance companies don't pay out life insurance on a suicide.

Left his wife in a really terrible financial situation.

He has two kids and presumably a very large life insurance policy. Granted, his family is probably secure enough financially but it's still a dick move.

EDIT: Not trying to sound unsympathetic but it just bothers me when people don't consider how their decisions affect others.

Not at all. In these situations my sympathy is always, always, always with the survivors. I'll do (and have done) just about anything to prevent a suicide, but it's a completely dick move and totally selfish, and often destroys the lives of the innocent people still living.

Guess it makes sense that he chose one of the more sensational methods of self-disposal.

It really pisses me off when people commit suicide. Depression I can kind of get, but dammit Mr. Scott, what if a miracle cure was discovered next week? Fight man, fight!

    Damn it all.

And I would feel the same way if it was an artist I hated. If Lindsey Lohan offed herself it would irritate me...life is so full of change and growth, she could experience a life change tomorrow, develop a massive desire to study the craft, and 50 years from now be one of the greatest cinema artists of this generation and only us old codgers would recall her partying before she starred in a bunch of Criterion honored films.

Sorry to rant, suicide really pisses me off.

What really surprised me about this is how many outlets and people pointed to ABC's unnamed, unattributed source and just ran with it.

Damn, ABC News are some serious airheads. Turns out that whole "you have the right person" re: the Aurora shooter's mom was in reference to herself (as in "is this Jane Doe?" "Yes, you have the right person"). I swear, no intelligent people go into journalism anymore since they know they won't get paid a good salary, so journalism is total garbage these days.

Less serious, but the same thing happened with those photos of "Sly's mom" at the Expendables premiere. Lady is clearly not Sly's mom and only a couple of news sites corrected themselves, and even then it took two days.

It wasn't until about three days later that I heard on the news that the people called her up in the middle of the night, she woke up having not watched the news, was asked if it was her and then said her famous line. But of course for days that was the "she knew she knew!" rally cry. It's as if the reporter assumed she knew all the information he knew at that point.

I feel the exact opposite way. I find suicide by depression to be a really cruel move for people who care about you, but if a person logically sees the end of his life coming soon and wants to end it all sooner than later (specially if it means suffering), I can understand it.

Of course, I've never been depressed enough to consider suicide or diagnosed with a terminal disease, so maybe my vote doesn't count.

Anyway, why did he off himself after all?
